For decades, Robert De Niro has been a father figure to the film industry – delivering exceptional performances and never once disappointing in his roles, whether as a maniacal killer or an X-rated dirty grandfather. In his 60+ years as an actor, De Niro boasts a filmography unlike any other in Hollywood, and even as an 81-year-old veteran of the industry, he continues to surprise the audience.

In his latest venture, Robert De Niro steps into the small screen for the very first time since his Hollywood debut. He stars alongside legends like Angela Bassett, Joan Allen, Jesse Plemons, and Matthew Modine in a powerhouse political conspiracy thriller for Netflix that revolves around a deadly 9/11-like global cyberattack.
Robert De Niro takes a potshot at Donald Trump?

In recent years, Robert De Niro has gotten increasingly political as he has aged into a better understanding of the crumbling socio-political system around him. With a bullseye on Donald Trump‘s back, De Niro has diligently and consistently taken a shot at the current President of the United States, calling him out on numerous occasions at press tours and media interviews.
However, his latest verbal attack on the POTUS comes from a different angle. De Niro’s Netflix political thriller, Zero Day, marks his first time working on a series but that was not the only surprising aspect to come out of the endeavor. His character, George Mullen, gets to deliver an iconic speech which – if analyzed closely – was a clear shot at Donald Trump based on the verbiage.
Zero Day gives Robert De Niro free rein on politics

With a vested interest in the subject, Robert De Niro has never shied away from expressing his mind on political matters, especially when it comes to Trump and his political antics. From calling him a “f**king moron” to a “malignant narcissist,” a “socio-psychopath,” and a “clown,” there isn’t an insult that De Niro hasn’t directed at Donald Trump over the past decade.
Now, he does even greater damage from under the protective veil of a fictional Netflix series as he goes on a full rant in favor of patriotism and the validity of truth. Interestingly enough, the speech closely resembles the sentiments that have motivated his public battles against Trump since his 2016 campaign.
Calling out a group of protestors, De Niro’s character Mullen says:
We’re Americans. What are we doing? We’re supposed to be standing up for each other. We’re supposed to be helping each other. You’re not behaving like an American or a patriot.
Despite the emotion behind it, the heavy-handed tone of the speech might inspire some and antagonize others. However, De Niro hopes that the show’s take on democracy, the dangers of unchecked power, and the pursuit of truth will help the audience navigate the real-world implications of Trump’s presidency in the years to come.
Zero Day is currently streaming on Netflix.
