Sam Wilson was the only Marvel hero who could have carried on the mantle of Captain America, despite Bucky Barnes’ numerous heroic qualities. One of the most significant changes in the MCU timeline came at the end of Avengers: Endgame when Steve Rogers retired and handed his shield to Sam Wilson. While some speculated that Bucky Barnes, Steve’s oldest friend and fellow super soldier, should have assumed the role, it was always clear that Sam was the true successor.
