Weather expert warns ‘a lot of lighting’ to hit TODAY as Met Eireann forecast ‘blustery’ conditions before 120kph gusts

MET Eireann have warned of a “blustery” day with “heavy rain” set to fall over the coming days ahead of a stormy weekend.

The weather bosses have issued a Status Yellow gale warning for all Irish coasts from 9pm tonight until 12 tomorrow.

And the UK Met Office also have an alert in place for Northern Ireland amid the windy conditions.

A yellow warning is in place for Antrim, Armagh, Down from 6am on Friday until 10am.

The UK weather bosses have warned: “Strong and gusty southerly winds may cause disruption to transport and infrastructure.”

Today will start blustery here in the Republic paired with “squally rain”.

Those conditions will dissipate as the morning goes on turning into sunny spells with showers in the southwest.

By evening it should be mostly dry in 11C to 14C temperatures.

However, weather expert Alan O’ Reilly of Carlow weather warned one spot is set to be hit by “a lot” of lightening before winds pick back up tonight.

He said: “That was a noisy night and heavy rain crossing the country this morning but it’s very mild this morning.

“Good sunny spells developing with odd shower but stronger winds and more heavy rain arrives tonight. A lot of lightning strikes out to the Southwest of Ireland.”

Tonight night will see heavy rainfall move in from the south after a dry start to the night.

Spot flooding is a possibility amid these “heavy” falls.

Temperatures remaining mild overnight at 9C to 12C but paired with “fresh to strong” winds.

More “heavy” rain on Friday before brighter weather extends from the west as the morning progresses.

The last of the rain should clear from the east coast by morning leaving sunshine in 10C to 13C temperatures.

That sunshine on Friday will still be paired with “gusty” winds as they pick up ahead of the weekend.

Friday night will be cooler than previous nights in 4C to 7C temperatures but weather will remain clear.

WEATHER WARNING INCOMING

The weekend is set to be a very windy one as an Atlantic storm passes close to Ireland.

Weather experts have warned gusts could reach up to 120kph over the two days.

Cathal Nolan of Ireland’s weather channel warned earlier this week: “This storm depression will bring wind speeds widely across the west and northwest of the country up to 100kph with localised gusts approaching 120kph likely in exposed locations from Ceann Mhása to Mizen Head and on to Fair Head.

And Alan O’Reilly of Carlow weather has warned today that yellow weather warnings “will be issued”.

He said: “Coming on Saturday night, Sunday morning very strong winds, more heavy rain again Saturday night, Sunday morning.

“Very wet and windy start to Sunday.”

He added: “The worst is at night though.”

‘PLENTY OF SUNSHINE’

However, before winds pick up on Saturday night it’s going to be a “bright” and dry day.

Met Eireann’s Andrew Martin said: “Saturday looks set to be a bright day with plenty of sunshine and just a few passing showers, these mainly affecting the west and northwest.

“Highest temperatures on Saturday of 10C to 12C in moderate south west winds.”

However, as warned winds, will reach “strong to gale force” gusts overnight with cloud thickening overnight and rain developing.

It will continue wet Sunday morning with “heavy spells” of rain before it starts to clear eastwards.

“Strong to gale force” winds again on Sunday with highest temperatures of 14C.
