“We don’t tell them it’s me auditioning”: Selena Gomez’s Genius Trick to Land Coveted Jobs Despite Casting Directors’ Doubts About Her

Selena Gomez knows she isn’t the acting powerhouse that she once was. A star who was once at the pinnacle in the industry knows that her stocks have dwindled. But none of that can change the fact that she still is Selena Gomez.

Her name is still enough to turn heads in Hollywood. After all, everything that she has done for more than a decade can’t go away in a flash. But much to everyone’s surprise, her reputation has potentially cost her a few roles. Until she found the most ingenious technique to combat the situation.

Selena Gomez wants to do more movies and series in her career

Life has not been easy for Selena Gomez. Though the 32-year-old has quite the filmography to her name, that doesn’t do justice to the reputation she once enjoyed. Having broken on to the scene with Barney & Friends, things did not take off how she would have expected them to.

While she did manage to carve out a reputation for herself as Alex Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place, her acting career never got the flourish she wanted to. And this is in no small part due to a combination of freak reasons.

While music has brought her great renown, acting is what brings her sanity. All of us can remember how she famously said in 2020 that she wanted to do more movies, shows, and the like. She said,

“I’ve been very strategic and trying my hardest to pick projects that are going to be compelling and not necessarily what people would envision me doing.” (The Hollywood Reporter)

There was one catch though.

The A Rainy Day in New York star had found herself on the wrong side of various auditions, sometimes because of the most unthinkable of reasons. And while that would frustrate any one, Gomez is not one to be bogged down by these.

She has given fans an account of her resilience time and again. And in the interview, she also given the world an example of her brains. She said,

“If they think I’m too young for a part, or whatever the case may be, we use a tactic where we don’t tell them it’s me auditioning so that they just have to accept me auditioning. Because sometimes even them just hearing that I want to audition, they’ll be like, ‘No, that’s not going to match for what we’re doing.’ Or it’s, ‘We’re going to hire people that nobody knows.’”

That isn’t all. She continued,

“I’ll sometimes send in a tape when they don’t know it’s me, or if it’s in person, my managers will just say, ‘Oh, we have a client that’ll have a read.’ And most of the time, they’ll go, ‘OK.’ And it worked on one of the movies I did (Fundamentals of Caring).”

This trick has worked wonders for the Ice Cream singer, who recently essayed the role of Jessi Del Monte in Emilia Perez. But her reputation wasn’t exactly an issue during that audition – film-maker Jacques Audiard didn’t really know who the Spring Breakers star actually was.

While Audiard would dub that he had love at first sight with Gomez, one wonders how that would have planned out had he been somewhat aware of her reputation.
