Over the years, Charlie Cox has given breathtaking performances in numerous roles across multiple different themed projects, but his one role that will forever be regarded as perfection at its peak will always be that of Matt Murdock in the Daredevil universe. To say the least, his portrayal was so epic that now fans can’t imagine anyone else as the character but him.

But playing the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, of course, didn’t come easy to him. Rather, in what might be one of the most surprising turn of events, he was originally called to read for a much different character. However, being the genius that he is, Cox put a non-negotiable condition for Netflix before saying yes, resulting in his eventual genius casting as Murdock in the saga.
Charlie Cox had to use a non-negotiable condition to score the role of Daredevil

Even though his iconic portrayal of Matt Murdock in the Marvel Universe has unarguably gone down as his best performance to date, Charlie Cox was ostensibly not the first choice for the role. This was because, while he was offered the Netflix series, it was originally to get him to read for a different character: Foggy Nelson, Murdock’s lawyer best friend.
As he recently revealed in an interview with GQ, the Stardust actor had auditioned to score a role in Netflix’s adaptation of Marvel’s Daredevil. And despite initially being an unlikely choice for the character he ended up playing – since Murdock in the comics is a tall redhead who is also blind – Cox wanted to bag the part of the crimefighting lawyer.
After the audition, Cox left for Scotland, where he received a call from his agent that he was being called to Los Angeles to test. But before he could discuss further, the line cut out since he was in the Highlands at the time. As The Defenders actor recalled, “I had a choice. I could go back to the city and try and make a call, or call him Monday.”
But since he had committed to the retreat, he stayed for two more days among the strangers until he finally received the signal to know that he had five new voicemail messages. Unfortunately, though, while the producers liked him enough to have him on board, Cox was being asked to test for the role that ended up going to Elden Henson.

However, that’s when the actor realized that he had somewhat of the upper hand in the situation, since even after 2 days, he was still being called for the series, and placed a non-negotiable condition in front of them.
And for whatever reason, having had this kind of empowering experience, I said, ‘I will come, but I’m only reading for Matt. I’m only reading for the lead.’
Perhaps it was this very boost of self-confidence that wound up helping him out besides his unparalleled performance in the auditions and the eventual screen tests that followed. This is because fortunately enough, things worked out in his favor, and Charlie Cox ended up scoring the role of the very Marvel hero that ended up changing his life.
Fans are glad Charlie Cox got that boost of self-confidence at the right time

Ever since Charlie Cox came out with the confession that the boost of self-confidence he got while in the Highlands was what eventually had him earning the chance to play the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in the Netflix series, fans can’t help but express how glad they are about this turn of events. And this reaction is for one too many genuine reasons.
For one, fans aren’t glad about this just because Cox ended up being the most perfect iteration of Matt Murdock. Rather, they are also celebrating this because they feel no one could have embodied the beloved character of Foggy Nelson better than Elden Henson. Thus, taking to X, here’s how some of them have been reacting to the same:
He clearly made the best decision for everyone

That’s so cool. Also I genuinely can’t imagine Charlie as Foggy

With all of this being put out there, it’s unarguable that both Charlie Cox and Elden Henson were really cast in the most accurate of roles in the streaming giant’s adaption to Marvel’s Daredevil – because if they had not, then the world would have been deprived of the finest iterations of Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson to date.
Daredevil can currently be streamed on Netflix.
