Ultra rare ‘mysterious’ 1p sells at auction for £90,000 – how to check if you have one in your collection

AN ULTRA rare 1p is selling at auction for an eye-watering £90,000 – here’s how to check if you have one.

A TikTok user showcased the coin in a recent video, claiming it to be one of the “rarest and most mysterious” British coins.

It is a Queen Elizabeth II one penny, dated 1954.

The TikToker says that hardly any of these pennies exist.

According to the video, in 1954, no pennies were officially released for circulation.

But it’s believed a few were minted, resulting in merely a handful of 1954 pennies made.

These could have been for test pieces or private issues – making their value incredibly high.

An old Brit man sorting through his coin collection found the 1954 piece – and it’s appearing on auction for tens of thousands.

In one listing, it has a reserve price of £90,000 but has the estimated price of £90,000-£120,000.

The TikTok video has been flooded with over 100 comments, with hopefuls asking if the dates on their pennies were significant.

One asked: “I’ve got a 1964?”

The poster responded: “No good sorry.”

Another bragged: “I have the coin ha.”

But the TikToker wasn’t convinced, quipping: “No you don’t.”

This is not the only coin that could make their lucky owners a huge profit.

A 2p with a subtle wording mistake – “New Pence” instead of “Two Pence” – could be worth around £1000.

Meanwhile, 50p coins decorated with a cartoon high-jumper for the 2012 London Olympics have been selling for as much as £142 and £216.

Another coin designed for the Games – which was minted with horizontal lines mistakenly etched into it – can fetch an enormous £3000 at auction.

It’s also worth checking the £2 coins lurking in your loose change, as a specific cat design could mean they’re worth over 100 times they’re usual value.

What are the most rare and valuable coins?
