BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. — The Butte County Sheriff’s Office has announced the arrest of two individuals following a detailed investigation into a double homicide discovered in Oroville.
On January 30, law enforcement and CAL FIRE personnel responded to a report of a burned vehicle at the intersection of Condor Road and Red Tape Road. Upon arrival, deputies found the charred remains of two individuals inside the vehicle. Subsequent DNA analysis identified the victims as Juan Daniel Arreola-Solano, 26, from Eureka, and Esequiel Valle-Arellano, 22, from San Diego. A forensic pathologist confirmed that both men had died from gunshot wounds.
The investigation revealed that the victims had traveled to Oroville from Humboldt County on the morning of January 30, accompanied by Wesley Evans, 45, of Rio Dell, and Samuel Ashley, 43, of Ferndale. Detectives found evidence of a dispute between Ashley and at least one victim regarding a recent gun and drug transaction. This conflict reportedly escalated when the group arrived at Condor Road, resulting in the murders and subsequent burning of the vehicle to conceal the crime.
After the incident, Evans and Ashley allegedly fled back to Humboldt County. The Butte County Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the Butte County District Attorney’s Office and CAL FIRE law enforcement, worked diligently to gather evidence. On February 10, arrest warrants for murder were issued for Evans and Ashley. The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team, with assistance from Butte County detectives and additional law enforcement agencies, apprehended both suspects in Humboldt County. Search warrants were executed at their residences.
Following a week-long investigation, Evans and Ashley were transported to the Butte County Jail on February 14. Their arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday in the Butte County Superior Court.
