If you’ve been online this past week, chances are you’ve seen the beautiful angler fish who captured hearts. There is a video that’s all over TikTok that shows a small anglerfish that perished shortly after swimming to the surface. Anglerfish are deep sea dwellers, and so many people related to this small fish that just wanted to see the light before she passed on.
Scientists were stunned because, apparently, this is the first time an anglerfish has been observed so close to the surface. Many Gen Zers have created stories, art, and even music surrounding this brave little fish; and it’s left us in a puddle of tears.
This little fish (yes, little because she was only six inches!) has become a beloved icon for so many, and it’s bumming us out that we can’t give this late fish some love and hugs. Seriously, we’ve been crying over it too, but after some searching, we may have found something that’ll help us mourn this angler fish.
Since we can’t hug the real fish, we found something we can hug to help us mourn her: an anglerfish Squishmallow. While we can never replace the real fish we adore, we can pretend we’re hugging her.
