‘They have a great stadium’ – Jose Mourinho breaks silence on 50/50 chance of facing Rangers in Europa League last 16

JOSE MOURINHO may be on his way to Ibrox in a few weeks’ time.

The so-called Special One guided Fenerbahce to the last 16 of the Europa League as his side beat Anderlecht 5-2 on aggregate in their play-off round clash.

Mourinho, 62, has never faced Rangers in a competitive match but that could now change with Fenerbahce one of the two potential teams lying in wait for the Light Blues in the next round of the competition.

Gers knew they would face the winner of Anderlecht vs Fenerbahce or Bodo/Glimt vs Twente.

The game between Anderlecht and Fener had to be suspended for 15 minutes due to violence in the stands and finished 2-2 on the night.

Meanwhile the match involving Bodo/Glimt and Twente was a thriller, with three goals in injury time and an eventual 6-4 aggregate win for the Norwegian side.

Mourinho’s men could also face Olympiacos and the Portuguese boss, who has also coached Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United, appeared to suggest that he has a preferred opponent already.

Speaking after seeing off the Belgians, Mourinho told reporters: “The flight time to Olympiacos is shorter so it could be them, but if we have to go to Scotland, we will go.

Rangers have a great stadium. It doesn’t matter to us. It doesn’t matter who our opponent is in the first match we will play in Istanbul.

Fred will be an important absence for us there. We will forget about the Europa League now.”

Mourinho worked with Fred during the Brazilian’s first six months at Manchester United, which coincided with the manager’s final six months at Old Trafford.

The midfielder was already at Fener when Mourinho joined the Turkish giants but he is a key player.

Fener have former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko on the books as captain plus ex-Leicester city defender Çağlar Söyüncü and Everton flop Cenk Tosun in their squad.

Former QPR and Blackpool winger Bright Osayi-Samuel is also a regular for the Turk.

The draw for the last 16 of the Europa League takes place tomorrow.
