The Academy Awards season is almost here, and we’ve got a new promo starring Conan O’Brien to hype up fans for the upcoming event. It’s not just your ordinary commercial as the famed comedian suffers from a devastating marriage breakup—with the Oscar statue!

Is this officially confirming that the iconic golden statue is a proud member of the LGBTQ community? We think so! The award-giving body never actually confirmed its gender, although it was modeled after a male figure.

The new ad for Oscars 2025 featured a hilarious skit from Conan O’Brien fighting with the Oscar statue over several matters, mostly hinting at a relationship problem. Towards the end of the video clip, Martin Scorsese supposedly calls O’Brien, with the latter saying, “Wow, what a surprise. Yeah, he’s right here. It’s for you.” This short statement from the ad clarified that the statue is indeed male.

Many fans across the world are probably still wondering whom the statue was modeled after and why it is called an Oscar. It’s obvious from its form that the figure was patterned after a male body, and Mexican movie star and filmmaker Emilio Fernandez is claimed to be the inspiration.
When he started his acting career in the 1920s, he met Hollywood star Dolores del Río, the wife of MGM chief art director Cedric Gibbons who was reportedly looking for a model to serve as the inspiration for the trophy.
Long story short, they met and designed the statue together. It is supposed to be a knight standing on a movie reel and holding a crusader’s sword. Since then, the design remained the same.

Today, we fondly call the statue ‘Oscar’ and while there is no confirmed source of how it got its nickname, it is believed that then-Academy librarian Margaret Herrick thought the trophy looked like her Uncle Oscar. The term became official in 1939.
Now that we know the backstory of the famous Oscar statue, we can confirm that he belongs to the LGBTQ community, especially after his upsetting marriage fallout with O’Brien, who has been tapped to host the 97th Academy Awards.
