One of the biggest mysteries in One Piece is about a certain clan that Luffy unknowingly has become a part of. Monkey D. Luffy belongs to the Will of D clan, a concept that Eiichiro Oda has been gatekeeping from fans forever. But of course, that can’t stop fans from creating their own theories.
One shocking theory suggests what exactly the D in Luffy’s name stands for. And it might not have anything to do with the World Nobles at all, instead, it involved the involvement of a higher existence.
Is Luffy a Demi-God in One Piece?

What exactly does the D stand for in the name of Monkey D. Luffy? It is a question that has gone unanswered for literal decades, forcing fans to come up with multiple theories and speculations. Thus far, fans only know that those who bear the middle initial D have inherited the Will of D.
It is also said that those who belong to the clan are Natural Enemies of the Gods. It is commonly understood that by Natural Enemy of God, God refers to the World Nobles, who are also called Celestial Dragons. But what if Eiichiro Oda never intended to refer to the World Nobles?
A theory suggests that D could stand for Demi or Half, and those D clan members would be Demi-Gods or those who have descended from mixed-blood beings. In many mythologies, the existence of Demi-Gods angers Gods, especially when they disregard the authority of Gods or overstep their boundaries to challenge power. Their position as being both mortal and divine causes conflicts among the Gods themselves.

Thus, Luffy might also be a demigod or at least the product of mixed races, something that was never meant to be. This puts him in a position to defy authority and even meddle in Godly affairs.
Luffy, as a mixed-breed could be the key to uniting all races
The One Piece world shows an abundance of different breeds and species. From humans, fishmen, and giants, to hybrid races like Wotans or Dosundadas, One Piece offers diversity. But more often than not, these races do not mingle with each other and might even hate another species. For example, the merfolk historically had a bad relationship with humans.

The Devil Fruits might be gifts from ancient Gods that carry their power, and the Nika fruit is proof of it. When matched with those who belong to the D clan, these fruits bring about incredulous results. Being a mixed breed puts Luffy in an advantageous position.
He can now be the uniting factor for all the species that exist in the One Piece world. Just like some demigods, a few D clan members harness their powers for malicious purposes, while others stick to shaking up the power in the world. As the story progresses, One Piece will eventually reveal how the Clan of D shaped history and what part Luffy plays in the bigger picture.
The One Piece manga is available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
