“The ground is a piece of rock”: Joe Rogan Claimed Taylor Sheridan Tricked Many ‘Yellowstone’ Fans With False Imagery They Sorely Regretted

Out of all the wonders Taylor Sheridan has gifted Hollywood’s entertainment industry through his imagination and wishful thinking, focusing on being as accurate as ever, and Yellowstone is yet another name on the list. Because of the spectacular Dutton drama he brought on the screens through the same, the showrunner even garnered tremendous fame and acclaim.

But while, like he aims to do with every other project of his, Sheridan tried to bring as much authenticity to this piece as possible as well, he seems to have fallen short with one particular element. And that very element related to the imagery portrayed in the show appears to have reportedly tricked a lot of fans into sore regrets now, as Joe Rogan recently claimed.

Of all the things Yellowstone has done besides entertaining fans with its (mostly) epic storyline — including breaking a lot of fans’ hearts and delivering a disappointing series finale — perhaps the worst-hitting one was fooling them with some rather false imagery of Montana, the Western U.S. state where the show was shot at numerous locations.

This was explained by Joe Rogan on his podcast Joe Rogan Experience, where he pointed out that those fans of the show who may have been inspired to set up new lives in the state were in for a rude awakening over winter. This is because the place really does go extreme during the cold climate.

As Rogan jokingly said while talking about Taylor Sheridan‘s show:

How many people got super confused by that show and bought a house there and they’re like, ‘What is this… why is the ground solid?’ Especially someone who’s never lived in the real North before. You don’t know what happens when your ground freezes. The ground is a piece of rock, so if you fall on it, it’s a rock. Everything freezes. It’s a different way to live, that’s for sure.

Well, in the showrunner’s defense, the series was actually shot at multiple different locations in Montana, so that’s that too. But while many readers might take this as a joke and think people wouldn’t have actually done what Rogan claims, they are actually in for a surprise, because, per official records, Montana has experienced a boom in tourism thanks to Sheridan’s show.

Truth be told, Montana has actually experienced a boom in tourism due to Yellowstone

While Sheridan ostensibly brought about that false imagery of Montana to get it to fit perfectly in his fictional story’s background, it actually seems to have boosted the state’s tourism for real. This is according to the study conducted by the University of Montana‘s Bureau of Business and Economic Research and the Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research.

As per the records, the smash-hit Western show was directly responsible for 2.1 million visitors to the state in 2021. Looking at these numbers in commercial terms, this translated into more than $730 million in tourist expenditure in the Treasure State despite the tepid temperatures in the state during the winters that many visitors must have had to make do with.

In fact, Melissa Weddell, who is UM’s Institue of Tourism and Recreation Research aka ITRR’s director, even directly confirmed the series’ involvement in boosting the state’s tourism as she said, “Film is an economic driver of tourism, and the ‘Yellowstone’ TV show has demonstrated the power of Montana’s American West image to influence people to visit the state.

With all of this being put out there, it’s unarguable that while Sheridan maintained authenticity in nearly all aspects of his show on John Dutton III’s generation of the Duttons, the show’s portrayal of Montana reportedly still turned out to be misleading for many. But on a positive note, it has also proven to be a powerful economic driver, so that’s that too!

Yellowstone can currently be streamed on Paramount Plus.
