After years of crafting unique and thought-provoking films, he became a global sensation with Parasite, the 2019 masterpiece that won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. He’s working on a film that he’s been thinking about for over two decades. It’s an action-horror story set in an unexpected but eerie location, and from what little he’s shared, it sounds like it’s going to be just as intense and gripping as his past work.

What’s next for Bong Joon-ho after Mickey 17?

While audiences anticipate the release of Mickey 17, fans of Bong Joon-ho are already curious about what the Parasite director has planned next. And he’s got something big in store—something he’s been waiting to make for more than two decades. In an interview with MBC Korea (via Fangoria), Bong revealed that his next live-action movie will be an action-horror film set in the underground subway system of Seoul.

He’s been thinking about this story since 2001, and said “That’s like my life project.” While he didn’t reveal too much, he did describe the first 90 seconds of the film, and it sounds intense. The opening scene follows a group of people running through a dark subway tunnel. In the next train car, people wearing the same clothes start moving toward them.

Then, more and more people begin crossing over, turning an ordinary subway ride into something terrifying.

Knowing Bong’s talent for mixing suspense and unexpected twists, this could be one of his most gripping films yet. But that’s not the only project he’s working on. He is also directing a fully CG-animated movie about deep-sea creatures whose home is under threat. He personally hand-drew the storyboards for the film, which is already halfway through production.

The story will explore the connection between marine life and humans, though not many details have been revealed yet.

What we do know is that it has a massive $52 million budget—making it the most expensive animated film in Korean history. Sony Pictures is backing the project, and a worldwide release is planned.

What did Robert Pattinson say about working with Bong Joon-ho on Mickey 17?

Robert Pattinson has never been one to shy away from ambitious projects, and his latest collaboration with Bong Joon-ho has left him more inspired than ever. In a recent BBC interview, the Twilight star spoke about working on the highly anticipated sci-fi thriller Mickey 17 and had nothing but praise for the Oscar-winning director.

Calling Bong’s work something that will “go down in history books,” Pattinson expressed deep admiration for the filmmaker’s unique storytelling style and ability to craft unforgettable cinematic worlds. Bong, known for Parasite and Okja, is once again pushing genre boundaries with Mickey 17, an adaptation of Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7.

The film follows a man repeatedly cloned to complete dangerous missions and has been one of the most talked-about upcoming releases, despite facing multiple delays. But for Pattinson, the wait is worth it—he believes audiences are in for something truly special.

Beyond his excitement for Mickey 17, Pattinson also shared a new creative ambition during the interview. Since becoming a father last year, he has been thinking more about animated films and revealed that he’d “love to do the voices of cartoons.” Given his deep, distinctive voice, it’s easy to imagine him bringing a character to life in animation, and fans would undoubtedly love to see this side of him explored.

Mickey 17 is scheduled for a theatrical release on March 7 2025.
