“That was our biggest disagreement”: The Phineas and Ferb Scene That Led To a Bitter Fight Between Creators Dan Povenmire, Jeff Marsh

Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh co-created Phineas and Ferb, arguably one of the best-animated shows of all time. The series ran for four seasons across eight years before concluding in 2015. However, the series is expected to return with a revival this year aiming to recapture the magic of summer with the titular genius investors.

During an interview, Povenmire and Marsh reflected on their collaboration on the hit series, which has delivered countless memorable moments for the fans. However, the co-creators admitted that despite working well together, they also had their fair share of disagreements. Here is what Povenmire and Marsh had to say about their biggest disagreement while working on the series.

Phineas and Ferb creators revealed their biggest disagreement on the series

Phineas and Ferb premiered in 2007 after being originally conceived by creators Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh during the mid-90s. The series was an instant hit with its eclectic cast of characters quickly becoming fan favorites.

During an interview with Slate, Povenmire and Marsh discussed their work on the hit animated series. The duo admitted that despite being great creative partners, they often got on each other’s nerves. As a result, the duo also had some big disagreements.

I think there was, like, it was how many times Perry the Platypus would punch Doofenshmirtz in the face in the first Shrinkinator episode.

Povenmire made the above comment, recalling the first Shrinkinator episode, where Platypus Perry and Doofenshmirtz get into a physical altercation.

The duo argued over how many times Perry would punch his enemy with Marsh adding:

Yeah. That was our biggest disagreement.

Povenmire explained that he wanted Perry to punch Doofenshmirtz multiple times. However, Marsh felt that it would be excessive and brutal but Povenmire argued it was funny. As a result, the two co-creators butt heads over the decision before settling on three punches.

Despite their disagreements, there is no doubt that Phineas and Ferb wouldn’t have been as huge a success without Povenmire and Marsh both bringing something unique to the table. As a result, the co-creators admitted that had devised a system that allowed them to work together despite getting on each other’s nerves.

Swampy and I live as far away from each other as we possibly can and still work together.

Povenmire commented explaining that he and Marsh usually worked on different things on the show, with very little overlap.

Marsh also joked that he couldn’t sometimes stand the sight of his creative partner, wearing blinds during their interactions. However, both Marsh and Povenmire admitted that they shared different artistic, comedic, and musical sensibilities. As a result, they were able to direct the series to a singular creative vision despite sometimes arguing with each other.
