Throughout its 11-season run, Modern Family tried to depict every possible situation that plagues a quintessential family of today’s day and age. From LGBTQ+ characters and complex parenthood to adulting troubles and relationship issues, the show had it all. But that’s not to say that Modern Family was without some problematic elements.
The show may have ended a few years ago, but fans’ strong opinions on certain issues keep the conversation alive. This time, Manny Delgado’s questionable behavior has come under scrutiny. Let’s take a look at what fans are talking about vis-a-vis the Latino character.
Manny displayed problematic antics in Modern Family
The son of an immigrant mother and the stepson of a businessman, Manny Delgado was many things – a creative playwright, an empathetic listener, and let’s face it, an emotional wreck at times. Nobody can forget his insufferable antics when Luke wanted to date Sherry after she rejected Manny’s proposal. But that’s a conversation for another time.
Reddit is ablaze with comments on how Modern Family’s Manny got a free pass over the course of the show in a range of different situations. To start with, his behavior towards Haley was bordering on Creepy-ville. He seemingly had a crush on her and even tried to kiss her after the (almost) car accident that happened in season 6.
Not only that, he always seemingly had a crush on women older than him, starting with the pilot episode itself. He gets shot down by a teenager when he is just in middle school at the time. Though his romantic escapades seem adorable at first, he soon crosses over to cringe territory, leaving fans baffled over his actions.
Another aspect of his personality that often comes under the microscope is his relationship with his mother, Gloria. It’s understandable that they have a closer bond than most other son-mother duos but sometimes that crosses a line too. They are not honest with each other, and always strive to have each other’s approval, as evident in the Mother’s Day episode where Claire forces Gloria to say something real on their hike.
Rico Rodriguez relates to Manny’s character
The actor who played Manny on Modern Family, Rico Rodriguez, actually admitted to resonating with the character thoroughly which allowed him to bring him alive so seamlessly. He shared with CBS that he grew into the character since he played Manny for 11 long years of his life.
Right from being just 11 years old in the first season to being an adult by the time the show wrapped up, it was quite a journey for the entire cast. The actor further shared,
When I was younger I would more likely say that we were the complete opposite; but as I’ve grown into the character I feel like now I have kind of followed his way of life.
Meaning how I present myself in public and trying to dress right and write poetry — it’s just all coming together. Manny is kind of becoming a little like me, and I’ve become a little like him, which is awesome. So we’re kind of like the same person.
The cast grew closer as each season passed, melding into a true blue family by the time the show ended. They supported each other and had a blast overall which converted into their on-screen chemistry as well.
