Taylor Kitsch Reveals Whether or Not He Wants to Appear in ‘Friday Night Lights’ Reboot

Taylor Kitsch is changing his tune about whether or not he would appear in a Friday Night Lights reboot.

The actor, who played Tim Riggins in the original sports drama series, would be interested in making a cameo.

“If you wanted to put me as a visiting coach with two lines, I probably would do that, just for fun,” he told People in an interview published on Thursday, January 9. “I think that would be the most I would do, because I love the way we left it.”

It was confirmed by Variety in December 2024 that a Friday Night Lights reboot was officially in the works at Peacock.

“Following a devastating hurricane, a rag tag high school football team and their damaged, interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas High School State Championship becoming a beacon of light for their town,” the logline says.

Taylor, 43, said that he was “bombarded when that news hit.” The show’s original director and executive producer, Peter Berg, has signed on to the reboot, along with original executive producer Brian Grazer.

While an official cast has yet to be announced, the American Primeval actor shared some advice for the actors who will be joining the reboot.

“Take a swing,” he said. “With his process, Pete allows you to take swings and fail, and that’s why the show came out as good as it was. He doesn’t put you in a box, so enjoy the process.”

Taylor confirmed that he has already been asked about making an appearance in the reboot, though he did not give a lot of details.

“I’ve been asked and we’ll leave it at that,” Taylor said during a Tuesday, January 7, appearance on SiriusXM’s The Spotlight With Jessica Shaw. But his motto is “never say never.”

Taylor Kitsch on If He Will Be in Friday Night Lights Reboot

“I’m always flattered … but I don’t want to go and do the whole thing,” he shared during the appearance. “I’d go and have fun, but I don’t want to lead a FNL reboot.”

The X-Men Origins: Wolverine actor would be open to portraying Tim again or returning as a new character in a cameo but not a full-time role.

“I would do both,” he said about the subject. “I could create something that could be hopefully pretty fun, but I think if you saw me as someone else, they’d say, ‘That’s Riggins.’ I would go play an opposing team’s coach or something and be on screen for like eight seconds. I would do that.”

Previously, he seemed pretty opposed to appearing in a Friday Night Lights reboot at all.

“You may see it, but I will not be a part of it,” he told Variety in July 2022. “I’m done. I’m good. I want to keep growing as an actor. Going back to Rigs — let him live in everyone else’s memories. Whatever that is, whatever he means to them, let him lay there. It was such a huge springboard for me, but I’m such a different actor now. It allowed me to explore the process, be f–king green and embrace it.”

On the other hand, Kyle Chandler, who portrayed football coach Eric Taylor, said that he has not been contacted about returning for the reboot.

“I have not. No calls. Nothing,” he revealed during an appearance on Today on January 8. “I don’t know what I’ll say [if I’m asked].”

Kyle, 59, won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2011 for his work on the series.
