A social media threat from a juvenile sparked concern among parents and staff at Long Valley Charter School on Monday night, but authorities have assured the community there is no danger to the school.
Deputies from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office responded around 7:30 p.m. after reports surfaced of a threatening post on social media, in which a juvenile claimed they intended to carry out a shooting at the school. Concerned parents and school staff quickly raised the alarm, prompting a swift law enforcement response.
Deputies determined that the post was made off-campus and outside of school hours. After tracking the source of the threat to the juvenile’s home, authorities made contact with both the suspect and their parent. Following an investigation, deputies found that the individual had no access to firearms and lacked the means to carry out the threat. The juvenile reportedly expressed remorse for their actions.
As a precaution, the Sheriff’s Office stationed deputies at the school the following morning as students arrived. Officers were on hand to answer questions from parents and school staff, reassuring the community that there was no ongoing threat.
The juvenile has been referred to the Lassen County Probation Department, and Long Valley Charter School has launched its own internal investigation.
Authorities are reminding the public of the serious consequences of making threats, even if they are not intended to be carried out. “We take all threats seriously, and we encourage parents to monitor their children’s online activity,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.
For now, life at Long Valley Charter School continues as normal, with parents and staff grateful for the swift response from law enforcement.
