She grew in popularity on the platform in 2019 and is currently the fifth most-followed individual on the platform. She recently commented on the TikTok ban controversy and has a clear opinion on whether Donald Trump should be thanked for reinstating it.
Rae ventured into films with the Netflix comedy He’s All That. Her music career had a less-than-stellar start with the critically panned single, Obsessed. However, she made a strong back after signing with Columbia Records and collaborated with Charli XCX on the Von Dutch remix. Her 2024 single, Diet Pepsi, received positive reviews.
Addison Rae speaking against Donald Trump is shocking for some fans
In a recent interview with Vogue France, Addison Rae shared her opinion on the TikTok ban controversy and Donald Trump‘s intervention. When asked if Trump should be thanked for reinstating the app on his first day in office, she replied with a “no”.
Rae shared that it was Trump who created the problem in the first place. She shared that she first heard of the possibility of a ban on the app when Trump was in office in 2020. She further shared that she was glad that the app survived the whole ordeal. She told Vogue France:
No, because he was the one who created the problem in the first place. He was the cause of the blockage. I remember the first time I heard about a possible ban of the app was around 2020. I was worried. Of course, I’m glad the network survived.
Some fans were not at all happy to hear Rae’s comments against Trump. One fan pointed out how the TikToker earlier introduced herself to Trump at a UFC match in 2021. Rae further commented against Trump’s new policies in her interview, sharing, “It’s unbelievable to see how quickly one can abuse a newly acquired power, being disconnected from others, and from the values of one’s country.” She shared that it was scary that certain freedoms were being taken away from people slowly.
Is there any truth behind Addison Rae’s claims of Trump initiating the TikTok ban and her alleged Trump support?
Addison Rae is right about her claim that the Trump administration initiated the ban on TikTok. After issuing several warnings to ByteDance to divest the platform in the U.S., Trump signed an executive order on August 6 to ban the platform if it were not sold by ByteDance in 45 days (via CNN). A new executive order on August 14 gave the company 90 days to sell the app in the U.S. or face a ban.
In response to the ban, TikTok filed a lawsuit seeking a temporary restraining order against the ban. In the meantime, US-based company Oracle was reportedly in talks to buy the platform (via CNBC). A preliminary injunction on Trump’s executive order was approved by the District Court of California in September.
When Trump left office in 2021, new president Biden signed an executive order to revoke Trump’s ban on TikTok (via The Verge). However, the Biden administration also ordered an investigation into the app, which culminated in the current events.
Regarding Rae’s alleged support for Trump, she made it clear at the time that she didn’t support Trump’s policies. She shared with the Los Angeles Times that she thought it was a rare occasion to ever get to meet a former President and she jumped at the chance.
