Severance: Chilling Theory Claims Mark’s Wife Gemma Scout Went Brain Dead Before Becoming Lumon’s Puppet

Since the first season of Severance premiered in 2022, the fandom has been running wild with all kinds of theories to connect the dots. Although the cast did denounce one of the more popular theories, which claimed Lumon might’ve been involved with cloning people, this isn’t the case surrounding Mark’s wife, Gemma Scout.

While presumed dead at the beginning of the show, she turns out to be indeed alive within the confinements of Lumon, and fans have come up with one theory that could explain the correlation between Gemma and Ms. Casey.

Theory suggests Gemma might’ve sustained brain death after the accident

Taking to Reddit, one fan theorized that Gemma, played by Dichen Lachman, went brain-dead after the accident. The theory further added that this might’ve allowed Lumon to get a hold over her body and install the Severance chips, which, if turned off, pushes her back into a coma.

Although Outie Mark confessed that he identified Gemma’s deceased body after the accident, given Lumon’s connection at the local morgue, it’s safe to say that getting a hold of her body wouldn’t have been a big deal for them. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Gemma/Ms. Casey, per the show’s creator, fans will get some answers before this season concludes.

With fans still waiting for some answers amidst the barrage of speculations surrounding Gemma/Ms. Casey, before season 2’s premiere, creator Dan Erickson confirmed that this season will delve into Gemma’s reality. Elaborating on it, he promised viewers that the answers would excite fans, adding (via The Hollywood Reporter):

That’s a really good question. I do think that you’re going to get a sense of the reality that Gemma has been living in, and more of a sense of the experiences that she’s had. We’ve seen a very narrow sliver of it, and I think people are going to be excited to see what we’ve got there.

While season 2 has continued Severance‘s dominance in the realm of sci-fi on the small screen, with only four more episodes to go, it’ll be interesting to see how much of the truth will be unveiled to the fans. As for its future, even though the creation of season 2 has apparently taken a huge financial toll on the Fifth Season studio, given its reception and Erickson’s plans for future seasons, there is nothing to be worried about.

Severance is available to stream on Apple TV,
