Panic as two flights into major Irish airport diverted over ‘strong winds’ before weather warnings in place

TWO flights due into Cork Airport yesterday had to be diverted to Shannon Airport due to strong winds.

The two flights were due to land within five minutes of each other at the airport yesterday evening but were unable to do so due to gusts.

The first flight, a Ryanair flight from Gdansk in Poland, was due to land at 6.20pm.

A second flight, also a Ryanair service, from London Stansted was due to land at 6.25pm.

FlightRadar24 shows that the flight due to land from Poland made several circuits of Cork Airport in an attempt to land before eventually opting to fly to Shannon in Co Clare instead.

The inward bound flight from London did not attempt a landing in the rebel county and instead flew straight to Shannon Airport.

Passangers from both flights landed safely in Shannon Airport and were due to reach Cork before midnight last night.

Bus transfers had been scheduled for 8.45pm to ferry diverted travellers to their destination.

The drive from Shannon Airport to Cork Airport takes just under two hours.

And it is estimated to take under 40 minutes to fly between the two airports.

Earlier flights due in to Cork Airport had landed safely.

A Status Yellow wind warning has since been issued for Cork by Met Eireann.

This was not yet in place when the two flights were diverted.

The warning will be in place from 4am on Friday to 8am on Friday.

This also extends to Kerry.

Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow and Waterford have also been issued with a Status Yellow wind warning.

This warning will be valid from 6am on Friday morning until 10am that same morning.

Met Eireann have warned of: “Very strong and gusty southerly winds.”

And they also warn of potential “fallen trees or branches, difficult travelling conditions” and debris and loose objects being displaced.

There is a risk early morning flights to Cork Airport may be impacted by these strong winds tomorrow.
