2 weeks agoNews RoomComments Off on Tottenham 1 Liverpool 0: Bergvall’s winner gives Spurs first-leg advantage but game overshadowed by Bentancur injury
LUCAS BERGVALL was the unlikely hero for Tottenham as they edged a narrow victory over Tottenham.
The youngster bagged his first goal for the club five minutes from time to give Spurs hope of reaching Wembley.
Pedro Porro missed a golden opportunity for Tottenham[/caption]
It looked like both teams would be heading to Anfield next month with the tie goalless after a cagey affair in North London.
But Bergvall produced a wonderful finish after Dominic Solanke had carved out an opportunity using his pace and strength.
Tottenham overcame an early injury scare to Rodrigo Bentancur and contained the visitors – something they failed to do in a 6-3 defeat to the Reds last month.
They came close to scoring through Pedro Porro when Alisson had to ball taken off his toe, while they also had Radu Dragusin to thank after he blocked a goalbound effort off the line.
Spurs even had the ball in the back of the net 15 minutes from time but Solanke was deemed to be offside following a review by VAR.

KEMI Badenoch will not reveal any major policies for at least two years as she orders the Conservatives to be ready to fight an election by 2028.
The Tory leader unveiled her “three-year plan” to turn the routed party around at a Shadow Cabinet meeting on Tuesday that leans heavily on Sir Keir Starmer’s own path to power.
Kemi Badenoch will not reveal any major policies for two years as she unveils her ‘three-year plan’ to turn the Tories around[/caption]
2025 will be focused on “rebuilding trust” with voters with apologies for what the Conservatives got wrong in Government.
Ms Badenoch has already said sorry for the party’s painful failings on migration, with other such grovels said to be in the pipeline.
Next year will focus on “establishing credibility” with efforts to contrast her team with Nigel Farage as an alternative government throughout 2026.
Then the remaining years of the parliament will finally see “plans for Government” unveiled and policies set out – but not before the very end of 2027 at the earliest.
The Leader of the Opposition also urged her frontbench to embark on a major outreach programme with Donald Trump’s Republicans and right-wing parties in Australia and Canada for tips on turning around party fortunes as quickly as possible.
One Shadow Cabinet source described the plan as “high on aims but low on detail”, while another praised it for its “ambition”.
Other senior Tories pointed to lessons learnt from how Sir Keir Starmer and his right-hand man Morgan McSweeney dragged Labour from an historic defeat in 2019 to No10 by 2024.
A source said: “Starmer showed it can be done in a matter of years, and there is no reason we cannot do the same.”
At a presentation on Tuesday morning, Badenoch and her chief of staff Lee Rowley set the three year roadmap focusing on five key priorities designed to detoxify the party after 14 mixed years in power.
Although the PM does not have to call an election until summer 2029, senior Tories believe the PM could go to the country as early as late 2027.
One senior Tory said: “Given that the government has already hit a record low in popularity, we need to be ready to go a lot sooner than most people think.”

TOM McKIBBIN has refused to rule out a move to LIV Golf after being linked with a shock switch to the Saudi breakaway.
It is believed that team skipper, and two-time major winner Jon Rahm wants McKibbin on his roster.
However, asked about the speculation, the Belfast man remained coy as to whether a move to LIV was on the cards.
Speaking to Golf Digest Middle East ahead of the Team Cup, he said: “I’m not going to make any comments this week out of respect for Justin [Rose] and Luke [Donald] and this tournament.
“It’s a team event so I’m just trying to do my best for the team and see how many points I can get.”
McKibbin is set for action this week in the Team Cup match in Abu Dhabi.
The Great Britain and Ireland team are pitted against a continental Europe side in the UAE.
They will go up against a Europe side featuring Francesco Molinari, Nicolai Højgaard, Rasmus Højgaard, Matteo Manassero, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen, Niklas Nørgaard, Thorbjørn Olesen, Matthieu Pavon, Antoine Rozner, and Romain Langasque.
Rahm’s team already includes England’s Tyrrell Hatton, Caleb Surrat and Kieran Vincent.
But there’s a vacancy to be filled before next month’s deadline closes before the start of the LIV schedule after Kieran Vincent’s relegation from the league in the individual standings.
He would follow compatriot Graeme McDowell to the LIV Tour ahead of the fourth season start in Riyadh, February 6.

The iconic firepit will likely see a lot of explosive action very soon[/caption]
With a star-studded cast of ex-Islanders who are all looking for love and hoping their second stint will be a lucky one, we can now reveal that there are some big twists coming.
Yes, that’s right.
There is something “really fun” happening in week two, a producer has spilled to us.
Chatting with The Sun ahead of the new series airing on Monday, executive producer of the show Mike Spencer lifted the lid on what’s being axed, and what’s going to be “lit”.
“Remember that little guy, that treehouse?” he asked, “It didn’t work. We didn’t do it last year either,” Mike said, confirming that the treehouse would not be making a comeback this year.
He then spoke about something else they don’t usually do for All Stars – Casa Amor.
“We don’t tend to do Casa Amor for this one,” he said.
Casa Amor is an alternate villa used in Love Island that was first introduced in season three and has been used in the show ever since – bar the spin-off series.
‘BIG TWISTS’ EN ROUTE TO THE VILLA
“We didn’t last year, because it’s only five weeks,” he added, before revealing something incredibly exciting.
Worried he had spilled too much tea, Mike added: “I’ve already said too much,” before gushing, “but week two is going to be lit.”
This comes as a whole host of former Islanders prepare to head into the South African villa on Monday night.
2025 ALL STARS CAST CONFIRMED
Curtis Pritchard from series five will be back for the All Stars series, as well as season three’s Gabby Allen, series four’s Kaz Crossley, and Nas Majeed from series six.
ITV has also confirmed Scott Thomas from series two, Olivia Hawkins from series nine, Catherine Agbaje from series 10, and Ronnie Vint from series 11, all as returning to the show.
Love Island All Stars 2025 official line-up
Love Island All Stars is returning to TV for season 2.
Here we take you through the line-up of Islanders’ who are set to go into the villa so far.
Gemma Owen’s ex Luca Bish from series eight will also be back, as well as series five alumni Elma Pazar and India Reynolds, and series three’s Marcel Somerville.
Insiders told The Sun that fiery Ekin-Su, 30, is now in hiding in South Africa ahead of the show’s launch on Monday.
A source said: “ITV bosses have long wanted Ekin back in Love Island and she’s finally agreed.
“After she split with Davide last January bosses immediately put her on their wish list.
“It took a lot of back and forth to persuade her to go back into the villa, especially after Ekin had such a tough time on Celebrity Big Brother.
“But she wants to use this new stint on Love Island All Stars to redeem herself and remind the public why they love her.
“ITV bosses haven’t decided if she’ll be a day one star, or a bombshell, but whatever happens she is telly gold and is going to be an incredible addition to the line up.”
