‘Never pour hot water on windscreen’ warning as DFB reveal €2.59 Dunnes Stores hack for defrosting ice on car

WITH icy roads and even icier windscreens hitting the entire country, fire experts are urging the public not to make a hazardous mistake.

Naturally when many people go to de-ice their windscreens, they immediately think to pour hot water over it.

But according to Dublin Fire Brigade, this can only make matters worse when it comes to damage to your car.

They revealed that by pouring hot water directly onto the windscreen in hopes of getting rid of the ice, it could cause the glass to crack.

The Dublin Fire Brigade has offered advice on the best way to combat this.

They said: “Tips for the cold weather continue. Never pour hot water on your windscreen as it may crack.

“Instead use warm water in a zip lock bag and slide it up and down the windscreen.”

People across Ireland can purchase a pack of 25 small ziplock sandwich bags in Dunnes Stores for just €2.59.

And all you have to do is fill the bag with warm water, zip it up and place it on your car windscreen to rid it off ice.

They added that it is important to remember that your car has headlights, which can also be damaged by hot water.

They said: “Don’t forget if your car has led lights they don’t give off heat to melt the frost on your head lights and tail lights so do the same with them.

“Ensure all glass is clear from ice so you have full view of what’s around you.”

The lowest temperatures recorded overnight were in Kilcogy in Cavan, where they plunged to a bone-chilling -8.2C for a short time, and at Limerick Junction where they hit a bitter low of -8C.

Met Eireann has also confirmed that lows of hit -7.5C in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, -7C hit Athenry, Co Galway and -6.7 in Oak Park, Co Carlow.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing level in many areas today as highs “really struggle” between 0C and 4C – with Met Eireann reminding people that a bout of weather warnings are in place.

COLDEST TEMPS EVER RECORDED IN IRELAND

AS freezing conditions and low temperatures hit Ireland, the country is set to bask in ice, snow and sleet.

With temperatures setting into minus figures, it won’t beat the coldest days ever recorded on the island.

The coldest areas in Ireland are usually found inland, with coastal areas benefiting from sea breezes to keep warmer.

Mullingar, Co Westmeath has the lowest average temperature at 9.3C yearly, but it is not the coldest ever recorded area.

Here are the areas in the country that have recorded the lowest ever temperatures:

  • Co Sligo: On January 16, 1881, –19.1C was recorded at Markree Castle in Collooney.
  • Co Kildare: On January 2, 1979, -18.8C was recorded in Lullymore.
  • Co Longford: On February 7, 1895, -17.8C was recorded in Mostrim while the area also saw the coldest July temperature ever at -0.3C on July 8, 1889.
  • Co Sligo: Again at Markree Castle, -17.2C was recorded on March 3, 1947, -8.3C on October 31, 1926 and -7.7C on April 15, 1892.
  • Co Donegal: The coldest ever temperature in May on record was detected in Glenties at -5.6C.
  • Co Offaly: On June 1, 1962, Clonsast saw temperatures drop to -3.3C.
  • Co Wicklow: The coldest ever day in August was in Rathdrum with temperatures dropping to -2.7C on August 30, 1964.
  • Co Wexford: On November 29, 2010, Clonroche saw temperatures drop to -11.5C.
  • Co Mayo: Also in 2010, temperatures in Straide dropped to -17.5C on Christmas Day.

A status yellow low temperature/ice warning remains in place until 12pm tomorrow.

Meanwhile, every single county apart from Donegal remains under a Status Orange low temperature and ice alert until 11am today.

Met Eireann this morning slapped Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Cavan, Monaghan, Galway, Roscommon and Tipperary with a fresh Status Orange low temperature and ice warning.

The 13-hour alert kicks in at 7pm tonight and warns of “extremely cold” conditions with widespread severe frost and ice, along with lying snow in some areas and patches of freezing fog.

Along with this, Met Eireann are warning of dangerous travelling conditions on roads and underfoot, travel disruption and delays and animal welfare issues.

New cheap iPhone could launch in weeks after hyped-up model was missing from last year’s event

APPLE is rumoured to be launching a new budget-friendly iPhone in a matter of weeks, which will be the company’s cheapest model.

It comes months after the hyped-up handset was missing from the iPhone 16 launch in September last year.

A number of leaks and rumours, starting as early as February 2023, foretold of a return of the iPhone SE.

It would be Apple’s fourth iteration of the device, having not released an SE model since 2022.

In late December, a leaker with a track record of accurate releases, said the iPhone SE 4 could be announced as early as January, MacRumors reported.

The iPhone SE 4, which has reportedly been nicknamed “V59” internally, will be released alongside iOS 18.3, the leaker claimed.

Over the past three years, iOS 15.3, iOS 16.3, and iOS 17.3 have all been released in late January.

If the leaker is correct, it means the iPhone SE 4 could be unveiled in a couple of weeks.

It’s worth noting that a January release would be earlier than usual.

The three previous SE models have all been announced in either March or April.

One reason Apple may release the handset sooner is because the company stopped selling the iPhone SE 3 inside the European Union (EU) in late December.

A January launch would mean consumers inside the bloc have the option to buy one of Apple’s cheapest handsets.

Inside the iPhone SE 4

The iPhone SE 4, which may also be called iPhone 16E, is forecast to resemble the iPhone 14 but with a single 48mp back camera.

Unlike the iPhone 14, however, it will have a newer A-series chip and 8GB of RAM to run new Apple Intelligence features.

The new model is also expected to ring the final death knell for the beloved Touch ID fingerprint scanner, and adopt Face ID.

The iPhone SE 3, which was released alongside the iPhone 14, ranged from $429/£449 to $579/£609.

This is far more affordable than the iPhone 14 Pro, which retailed at $999/£1,099.

The iPhone SE 2 ranged from $399/£419 and $549/£569, so a slight increase in price from its predecessor seems probable.

How does Apple's FaceID tech work?

Apple's facial recognition system for the iPhone X isn't massively complicated. Here are the steps your phone takes:

  • The phone will use various sensors to work out how much light it needs to illuminate your face.
  • It then floods your face with infrared light, which is outside the visible spectrum of light.
  • A dot projector will produce more than 30,000 dots of this invisible light, creating a 3D map of your face.
  • An infrared camera will then capture images of this dot pattern.
  • Once your phone has all that info, it can use your face’s defining features – like your cheekbone shape, or the distance between your eyes – to verify your identity.
  • It computes a score between 0 and 1, and the closer it is to 1, the more likely it is that your face is the same as the one stored on your iPhone.
  • Apple says there’s a one-in-a-million chance of someone else getting into your iPhone with Face ID, although the system has been tricked with twins.
  • Still, it’s arguably better than the alternative: Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint scanner has a one-in-50,000 chance if being fooled.

Nearly 14,000 Americans Have Been Infected With New Respiratory Virus HMPV, CDC Reports

COVID-19 levels are surging. Human bird flu cases are also on the rise. And now, the human metapneumovirus, or HMPV for short, is infecting thousands of Americans around the country. The highly contagious virus, which belongs to the same group as respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), measles, and mumps, can cause congestion and breathing problems similar to the common cold, according to Cleveland Clinic.

The National Respiratory and Enteric Virus Surveillance System (NREVSS), commissioned by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has reported an alarming spike in positive HMPV cases since Thanksgiving. As of Dec. 28, nearly 14,000 Americans have been infected with HMPV.

However, infectious disease physician Amesh Adalja says people are blowing the illness’ severity out of proportion. "There’s just this tendency post-COVID to treat every infectious-disease anything as an emergency when it’s not," Adalja said in an interview with The Washington Post. "You wouldn’t probably be calling me in 2018 about this."

Be that as it may, health officials urge the public, especially seniors, those with children, and the immunocompromised, to stay vigilant. Keep reading for everything you need to know about HMPV, including common symptoms and forms of treatment.

RELATED: COVID Levels are "Very High" and "High" in These 28 States After Holiday Surge.

How does HMPV spread?

The virus is highly contagious and can spread in one of two ways: through direct contact (like kissing) or from touching contaminated objects (like door handles). Additional examples include shaking hands, hugging, sharing food/drinks, coughing, sneezing, sharing kid toys, and touching infected surfaces, according to Cleveland Clinic.

Common HMPV symptoms to look out for.

It can be hard to differentiate HMPV from the common cold, as their symptoms are nearly identical. However, untreated and/or more advanced cases of HMPV can result in upper respiratory infections and make lower respiratory infections like pneumonia and asthma worse, says Cleveland Clinic. In most people, HMPV will cause the following symptoms:

  • Coughing
  • Fever
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Sore throat
  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Skin rash

If you already had HMPV as a child and are otherwise healthy, your symptoms likely won’t be as harsh this time around. Conversely, adults 65 and older and those who are immunocompromised (especially those with breathing difficulties) might have a harder time getting over the illness.

RELATED: Flu Levels Are "Very High" and "High" in These 14 States.

How do you get tested for HMPV?

You can’t self-test for HMPV at home, but a quick nose or throat swab at the doctor’s can determine whether you have the virus. Your sample will be sent to a lab, where experts will test for various viruses. In some cases, a chest X-ray may also be taken.

How do you treat HMPV?

Since there is no vaccine or antibiotics for HMPV, rest and hydration are key. According to Cleveland Clinic, mild HMPV cases typically resolve on their own within a week, though lingering symptoms are normal. Adults can also take over-the-counter medications, like pain relievers and cough suppressants, to help alleviate symptoms.

After a couple of days, if your symptoms aren’t getting better or have worsened, speak with a healthcare provider for additional treatment options.

Mack Hansen admits ‘I let my emotions get the better of me’ as Connacht star breaks silence after being slapped with ban

MACK HANSEN has spoken out after being hit with a three-game ban for his post-match outburst after Connacht’s defeat to Leinster.

The Ireland and Connacht winger was slapped with a six-week suspension after slamming officials following the game on December 21.

Three weeks have been suspended, meaning he will miss the province’s next three games but will be available for the Six Nations.

Speaking after the 20-12 defeat, he said: “To be honest, it felt like we were getting reffed out of the game for the first 40 minutes, pretty much.

“Then, we were able to do our thing. We were able to show the exciting rugby that we play.

“We’re not a team for excuses, but that’s what I feel. I feel like in the first bit.

“We were getting pressured from what seemed like 16 men against us instead of 15, to be honest with you.”

Reacting to the ban, Hansen apologised for his behaviour and admitted he had let his emotions get the better of him.

He said: “People know I always wear my heart on my sleeve. However after the Leinster game, on this occasion, I let my emotions get the better of me.

“Upon reflection, my comments to the media were ill-advised, and fell far short of the standards I expect of myself, and what the sport expects of its players.

“I want to offer an apology to the match officials for any distress my comments may have caused. Our games are built on mutual respect and I didn’t show that after the game.

“I also want to apologise to the URC, and I fully accept the findings of the independent disciplinary panel.

“I love Connacht, and I love rugby.

“Moving forward, I will channel all my energy and passion into representing my province and country to the absolute best of my ability – both on and off the field.”

Connacht Rugby did not make any further comment after being handed a suspended €10,000 fine.

In addition to the suspension, Hansen has been told to make a full apology to referee Chris Busby.

He will also undertake an appropriate course as decided by URC Head of Match Officials Tappe Henning and IRFU Head of Referees Dudley Phillips.

Connacht Rugby will also have to run an education session with their players about how to conduct themselves in post-match media sessions and interactions with the media.

As a result of the suspension, Hansen will miss the Challenge Cup games against Lyon and Cardiff (January 11 and 17) and the URC clash against Glasgow Warriors (January 24).

However, he will not miss any of Ireland’s Six Nations games.
