TGL purse: How much money is up for grabs in Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s new indoor golf league

TGL golf league made its much anticipated debut on Tuesday after a year-long delay.

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Wood’s new venture got underway as The Bay Golf Club defeated New York Golf Club in the debut event at the Sofi Centre in Florida.

Shane Lowry of The Bay Golf Club hit the first ever shot of the golf league before his team went onto win 9-2 against New York GC

Offaly native Shane Lowry, and teammates Ludvig Åberg and Wyndham Clark made light work of Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler and Matt Fitzpatrick after a 9-2 win.

The golf league was postponed for a year until 2025 after the purpose-built Sofi Arena sustained severe damage as the white roof had fallen through after a storm.

And the league’s debut and received a mixed reactions after its opening night from fans on social media.

The indoor league combines virtual golf with the real deal as competitors aim their tee and approach shots at a 60 foot screen which mimics whichever course they’re ‘playing’.

A strict 40-second shot clock is enforced for each player, and penalties are applied for exceeding the time limit, encouraging quick decisions and maintaining the match’s tempo.

The format is as follows. A three-man alternate shot for nine holes, followed by six holes of singles, in which one player from each team faces another one-on-one.

Each of the three player’s play two singles holes. Each hole is worth one point. In the event of a tie after 15 holes, a three-man closest-to-the-pin competition will decide the winner.

A match win in regulation or overtime is worth two points, while a loss in overtime earns one point. A regulation loss earns zero points.

PURSE

TGL offers a whopping $21 million purse that is up for grabs, with a $9 million payout awarded to the winning team at the end of the season.

That’s $2.25 million for each of the four players on the winning team at the season’s end.

Corrie is dying a death as stars leave the show in droves – ITV’s cash crisis means it won’t be on TV in 10 years

Coronation Street actress axed, another quits, due to high production costs.

IT’S no exaggeration to say that Coronation Street is a truly national treasure – part of the fabric of this country.

For 65 years it has weathered wars, recessions, and even pandemics and through every decade it’s been there entertaining millions of viewers.

Sue Cleaver is also leaving the soap after 25 years playing cobbles icon Eileen Grimshaw[/caption]

It was the only soap that remained on-air through covid when lockdowns forced productions to halt.

But sadly it is now facing a crisis that could see the end to the cobbles as we know and love it – and it’s not one of its own making.

I’ve covered soaps professionally for more than a decade and I’ve seen them at their best and their worst – but now is the most challenging time for them all.

The perfect storm of massively increased television production costs has hit a TV advertising market in free-fall – and it’s very, very bad news for Coronation Street.

As Corrie’s Sally Ann Matthews said bluntly – “ITV’s got no money”.

Big stunts like the dramatic tram crash that destroyed half the cobbles, or the huge devastating sinkhole are increasingly a thing of the past. Filming on location is all-but ruled out over cost concerns.

Budget restraints mean that there are fewer appearances of beloved characters and an over-reliance of younger, newer, cheaper stars.

And it can’t be ignored that Corrie’s core audience is ageing – and to be blunt – dying off.

The days of people gathering around the telly of an evening to watch live are over.

Despite that Coronation Street still pulls in a respectable 5m each night – more than Emmerdale and almost twice as much as BBC rival EastEnders.

It is still the most-watched show on TV – week in, week out. But it’s a far cry from the 20m who used to watch.

And with fewer viewers comes much less advertising revenue and money to pump into the show.

There was all-round shock last year when ITV boss Kevin Lygo admitted that the phenomenal Mr Bates vs the Post Office – despite being critically-lauded and a huge hit for the channel – made no money.

In fact, it lost ITV more than £1m with Lygo admitting: “Mr Bates has made a loss of something like £1m and we can’t continually do this.”

Add to that the rise of streaming and Netflix, Paramount Plus, DIsney Plus with their millions to pump into its own dramas – and you can begin to see what Corrie and the other soaps are up against.

But it’s not just that. Changes to the tax system a few years ago now meant that TV productions aren’t able to lock-in cast without employing them on salaries.

It effectively means that the cast are more free to take on other work – whether it’s acting jobs, personal appearances or lucrative social media influencing.

A source revealed: “There are soap stars who were making very good livings from their jobs – but doubling their incomes from influencing.

“You can’t blame them for quitting what can be a relentless, full-on job when a few Instagram posts can bring in more money. It’s a real worry that left bosses fearing that more could follow suit.”

Hollyoaks has successfully clawed its way back from the brink of oblivion[/caption]

Already Corrie is losing a number of stars – some through quitting and others through necessity with new boss Kate Brooks having to take tough decisions.

Colson Smith and Sue Devaney have been told they are being written out, while Charlotte Jordan and Sue Cleaver both opted to leave the show this coming year.

When Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks suffered a similar crisis under Channel 4’s own cash woes – it slashed episodes by 40 per cent, made more than 100 staff redundant and axed 20 cast members.

And with a new boss too in Hannah Cheers, the Chester-based soap has actually managed to come out of it stronger – both creatively and financially – and clawed its way back from the brink.

Corrie isn’t in those dire straights yet – but there are fears that if ITV’s cash issues continue then the decline could speed-up and the show won’t make it to broadcast anymore.

Instead there are swirling rumours that ITV’s future is more with its streaming service ITVX rather than traditional television.

One source said: “Ultimately TV is dying and streaming is the future. Even Corrie will eventually be a streaming show but that’s not a bad thing. It has had so many reinventions over the years that it will just be another evolution.”

And with viewers increasingly becoming more and more digitally-savvy – they could embrace it on ITVX and see a huge revival.

That’s not something unprecedented either.

When Neighbours was brutally axed in 2022 – it looked like the end. The same issues that have been battering Corrie, knocked Neighbours out fully.

Coronation Street Spoilers: News & Cast Updates

The beloved British soap has been captivating audiences for decades.

The show follows the lives of the residents as they navigate love, loss, family drama, and community struggles.

Here’s the latest on:

Until, that is, Amazon came along with its mountains of money – and now Neighbours is consistently in the top ten most watched shows on Prime – a huge achievement.

So for all the talk of a Corrie crisis – don’t count it out – there’s life in the cobbles yet.

Wills’ break with tradition to share public declaration of love for Kate puts end to Royal Family’s ‘stuffy’ stereotype

PRINCE William’s public decoration of ‘love’ for Princess of Wales on social media on her birthday is pure #couplegoals, as they say online.

Anyone who persists in the myth the Royal Family are stuffy and unable to show emotion needs to take a rain check today.

Prince William is not only seen as a popular and modern face of the royals in the 21st century but now showing he is relaxed about confident about telling everyone exactly how he really feels about Kate.

Sure we all watched as he declared his love and devotion for Kate in Westminster Abbey back in 2011 – but that was their wedding!

His genuine heartfelt birthday message to millions on social media today hailing his ‘incredible’ wife while also celebrating her ‘strength’ as ‘remarkable’ during a year where she has faced cancer is a welcome public gesture in hard times.

Writing also of George, Charlotte and Louis, declares on social media ‘We love you’. Have we ever seen this kind of display attention from a royal before? No chance.

It is #couplegoals, as they say on social media.

This openness is a direction the couple have been moving for many years. It comes as no surprise as those of us who have witnessed the couple together in recent years can testify.

There is often a shared smile, a nod, a gentle arm around the waist, or even a holding of hands.

But this birthday message is also a clear sign, coming after he admitted that 2024 had been one of the hardest of his life, that William is happy to tell the world how he feels when the time is right.

This personally written message signed ‘W’ is a welcome change from a palace office worker posting agreeable birthday message with some archive photos which we normally see on each occasion.

It’s January, it’s dark and cold outside, we are all skint and overweight after festive indulgence, so let’s enjoy and revel in a little slice of love and happiness.

But it’s Kate’s big day and there will be so more messages from around the world wishing the princess many happy returns as she turns 43-years-old – including everyone here at The Sun.

And while over the last 12 months there has been a lot of nonsense posted on social media about the Princess of Wales – this year let’s try and only remember this special one.

Dragons’ Den star’s company suffers major blow & suddenly COLLAPSES – as owner says ‘bottom has fallen out of her world’

A DRAGON’S Den star has said the “bottom has fallen out of her world” as her company collapses suddenly after a major blow.

Sara Davies, who created the papercraft company Crafter’s Companion, was forced to liquidate her company just three days before Christmas.

Sara has been a panellist on Dragon’s Den for six years[/caption]

In an interview with Chronicle Live Sara told how she initiated a “rescue package” plan as soon as she was presented with the bad news.

This week, the entrepreneur bought her company back from administrators after what she called a very “busy Christmas”.

Sara invested a large amount of her own money and received backing from an unnamed partner to get her company back into shape.

Her biggest concern was losing staff who she said have worked for me for her for some 20 years.

Whilst some job roles will be made redundant, she said the majority of employees will be able to stay adding she is “really confident” in her new plan.

“In all honesty you don’t realise how valuable something is until you think you’ve lost it – and I guess last year I lost it,” she added.

Crafter’s Companion was launched in 2005 when Sara was studying at university. The business sells everything from papercraft and art to sewing and needlecraft.

The company counts more than 200 employees around the UK and rest of the world, and has offices in North East England and California.

Despite early successes, the last couple of years – with the cost of living crisis and inflation- have dealt a serious blow to the business with revenue dropping over 20 per cent in 2023.

For Sara, watching her company which she had built over 18 years struggle was the “most upsetting thing.”

Growth Partner became a major shareholder last year but despite the multimillion-pound investment the firm continued to lose money.

The entrepreneur called the decision “emotional” – referring to her company as her third child.

Despite the agony of having to liquidate her company she said she understood her investor’s motivation because it was a financial decision.

“I can’t say if I wasn’t in their shoes, I wouldn’t have made the same decision,” she said.

The Dragon’s Den star was unsure whether she would return to the show but said she will “wait and pray and hope” the BBC give her the contract.

She also regularly appear on Morning Live and was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing.

The European McDonalds that turns into a nightclub with live DJ sets and light shows

WE’RE all guilty of tumbling out of a nightclub in search of a greasy kebab or a bag of chips but luckily there’s a European train station where you can do both.

Nyugati Railway Station in Budapest is home to one of the world’s most beautiful McDonald’s.

The McDonald’s turns into a nightclub on Friday and Saturday nights[/caption]

The Maccies reopened back in September following an eight-month-long revamp.

But now its vintage design of large glass windows and copper-covered light fixtures is accompanied by a series of late-night live DJ sets.

Every Friday and Saturday, between 10pm and 4am, the Hungarian McDonald’s is transformed into a nightclub.

During the weekend DJ sets, a series of light paintings are projected onto the grand ceilings.

The light projections range from fish swimming in the depths of the ocean to journeys from space.

It means diners bop to music, Big Mac in hand, as they gaze at the ceiling.

Originally only scheduled to run until the end of 2024, the Nyugati Lounge is set to run throughout 2025 too.

The next DJ set will be held on Saturday, January 10.

A description on its website reads: “We invite everyone to a special journey to the renovated Nyugati restaurant, where our Nyugati Lounge music program has started.

“From now on, every Friday and Saturday evening, between 10 pm and 4 am – in addition to your Mekis favorites – we will be waiting for you with light painting and a DJ in one of the most beautiful McDonald’s restaurants in the world”.

The McDonald’s at Nyugati Railway Station first opened in 1990.

Its redesign brought in a series of other mod cons, including touch screen kiosks that are now commonplace in most McDonald’s in the UK.

Diners can even watch a food conveyor belt between the two levels of the kitchen, a feature that’s slated to be unique.

The McCafe also has a new outdoor terrace, which has been moved to the entrance level.

Unique food options include the Goosey Gustav burger, which has foie gras on top.

Zsolt Égi, managing director of Progress Étteremhárosl Kft, which operates McDonald’s restaurants in Hungary, said that it was one of their “most impressive restaurants”.

They added: “Nyugati tér McDonald’s opened 34 years ago, in 1990, and is considered one of the most beautiful McDonald’s restaurants in the world.

“We renovated it in half a year, so that we could stay true to this heritage.

“During the transformation, we used many solutions that are considered unique in the McDonald’s system worldwide, as well as elements made of real, natural building materials.”

Nyugati Railway Station was designed by Austrian architect August de Serres, who later went on to help built the Eiffel Tower.

Three other beautiful McDonald's to visit in Europe

HERE are three other beautiful McDonald's Brits can visit in Europe.

Porto, Portugal

For a McDonald’s with a palatial vibe, head to the cute city in the north of Portugal.

It is housed in a former historic coffee shop, with grand architecture – including ornate ceilings, glitzy chandeliers and marble floors.

It looks just as incredible from the outside, with stained glass windows and an eagle sculpture over the entrance.

Since it was opened by the fast food chain in 1995, it has become as much a point of interest in the city as the Livraria Lello bookshop and port wine.

Madrid, Spain

The McDonald’s on the city’s Gran Via is located in a grand cream-coloured corner building.

It was the fast food empire’s first ever Spanish outpost, with its doors being opened in 1981.

The Madrid location was formerly a jewellery shop, which perhaps explains its stunning interiors.

Some of its original features include a winding staircase, as well as marble pillars and statement chandeliers.

Kristiansand, Norway

It would be easy to think you’re stepping into a rather important institution when heading to McDonald’s in Kristiansand.

Indeed, the chain’s restaurant in the Norwegian city was formerly the home of a bank.

The restaurant’s iconic letters are now positioned above the original grand columns.

However, the majestic entrance is no longer in use, with guests needing to go in via a side door.

And here are some of the most beautiful McDonald’s you can visit in the world from former banks to UNESCO sites.

And a Hamburg McDonald’s has a “drive-thru for boats” and has been named the coolest in the world.
