Only Reason Jessica Jones Exists Is Because Marvel’s Original Replacement Hero Was Terribly “off continuity and bad storytelling”

Given his prior history of working in crime and noir comics, author Brian Michael Bendis, who marked his Marvel debut with Ultimate Spider-Man, spearheaded the MAX imprint, which focused on more adult-themed stories. As a result, the writer partnered with artist Michael Gaydos to pen the critically revered Alias, starring Jessica Jones.

Interestingly, the comic originally featured one of Bendis’ favorite Marvel heroes, Jessica Drew, the alter-ego of Marvel’s Spider-Woman. However, despite his passion for the character, her involvement was eventually scrapped in favor of the writer’s original creation.

Lack of continuity contributed to Jessica Jones’ Marvel debut

While Michael Bendis’ work on Ultimate Spider-Man amassed critical success, it was Alias that allowed him to exercise his chops when it came to writing more gritty stories. His expertise in noir and crime chimed well with Marvel’s MAX imprint, and his work on Alias earned him the Eisner Award for Best Writer in 2002.

But before Jessica Jones made a splash with her arrival in the Marvel universe, Alias was originally supposed to revolve around Jessica Drew, a character that Bendis has always been passionate about. However, as the development of the comic progressed, the story became entirely something else because the original idea didn’t sit well with the rest of the continuity.

The author detailed (via VG247):

Originally, ‘Alias’ was going to star Jessica Drew, but it became something else entirely, Which is good, because had we used Jessica it would have been off continuity and bad storytelling.

Alias eventually served as the basis for the Netflix adaptation by Melissa Rosenberg, starring Krysten Ritter.

Following the launch of Disney Plus, Marvel ended its association with Netflix, and many felt the Defenders saga was as good as over. Fortunately for fans, Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel’s Streaming, Television, and Animation division, canonized the Defenders.

With Charlie Cox and Jon Bernthal making the jump to the MCU, Krysten Ritter is enthusiastic about her potential return as Jones, thanks to Winderbaum’s comments at the D23 Brazil fan expo (via Comicbook).

Brad Winderbaum said that? That’s really exciting to hear. Isn’t that the guy who makes the call? Come on, Brad! Let’s get it going. Let’s do it. I’ll be ready.

Considering the MCU has shifted to a more traditional approach to TV, starting with Daredevil: Born Again, Jessica Jones fans might be in for some treat in the foreseeable future.

Jessica Jones is available to stream on Disney Plus.
