Marvel Rivals is a shining example of how to do a live service game right, and the developers at NetEase Games aren’t slowing down one bit. The game is getting a mid-season ‘Season 1.5’ update and boy are there some changes to talk about. The biggest one by far is the new system for converting our leftover Chrono Tokens into Units.

With these tokens resetting at the end of every season, there would’ve been no point in having any excess. But NetEase has already brought a solution to the problem. So if you’re hardcore grinding Season 1 and worried about your investment going to waste, you can leave those worries at the door.
Marvel Rivals is making the right monetization moves

The decision to introduce this feature comes directly from community feedback. In the latest Dev Vision video, Marvel Rivals creative director Guangguang Chen talked to us and addressed a lot of player feedback. One of the biggest ones is unused Chrono Tokens.
We’ve heard your feedback about excess Chrono Tokens and how frustrating it can be when they don’t carry over…. We want to make sure that your gaming experience is marvelous, and that you never feel like you aren’t rewarded for your efforts.
He went on to explain the new system that the developers are going to implement. According to him, the new system will allow players to exchange excess Chrono Tokens for Units.
Now, you can convert those excess Chrono Tokens into Units. If you purchase the Luxury Battle Pass and redeem all its rewards, you’ll be able to convert any leftover Chrono Tokens for Units at a specific ratio.
This is already great news in and of itself because units can be used to get skins, but he didn’t reveal the exact conversion rate so we can hold our excitement for now. For all their good work, NetEase has also made some mistakes, so let’s hope for the best.
Chrono Tokens are tied to the battle pass only, so by letting us exchange leftover Chrono Tokens for Units, NetEase is effectively expanding the ways in which we can get cosmetics. And that is a welcome change to the game’s monetization strategy for many.
NetEase has really succeeded where it counts

We’ve seen a lot of live-service titles fail spectacularly in recent years because of bad decision-making. Big games from big names have failed. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and XDefiant are all good examples. Marvel Rivals has broken this trend. By actively listening to player feedback and making meaningful changes, NetEase Games is setting a new standard for live-service monetization.
NetEase’s mid-season update, titled Season 1.5 has been full of big changes. In addition to the Chrono Token conversion system, we’re getting new playable characters, The Thing and Human Torch. They will join the already existing cast of the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richard and Invisible Woman to complete the squad.

A brand-new map set in Central Park will also be added, along with balance adjustments to several heroes. And going back to the new system, since the exact Chrono Token-to-Unit exchange rate has yet to be shown, we can’t tell whether the conversion will be generous enough to make a meaningful impact.
All in all, the game is set to continue its domination and success. This update is a strong indicator that NetEase is paying close attention to community feedback and adjusting accordingly. Marvel Rivals has quickly established itself as one of the most successful live-service games of 2024 and beyond, and we’re here for the journey.
