Hollywood has seen a lot of actors with failed marriages, and Guy Pearce’s is yet another name on the list. Tying the knot back in 1997, the now-57-year-old actor, with hits like Memento (2000), The Brutalist (2024), and L.A. Confidential (1997) on his resume, he found himself and his wife, Kate Mestitz, undergoing a divorce around 18 years later.
But throughout the time that they were together, the actor could sincerely admit that she was “the greatest love of my life,” as he recently claimed, years after their divorce. In fact, the Marvel actor had gone through so much in his life with his ex-wife and ostensibly found such a comfortable and safe place with her that he even let out his Kevin Spacey fears to her.
Guy Pearce claimed Kate Mestitz was “the greatest love of my life”
Back in 1997, Guy Pearce star tied the knot with Australian psychologist Kate Mestitz, whom he met back in 1980 when they were just 12. For eighteen stunning years, the pair spent their time together before one day, it all just came tumbling down. In 2015, the two got divorced, and it was reportedly Mestitz’s decision to do so.
Even then, Guy Pearce isn’t scared to admit that she used to be “the greatest love” of his life when asked about it. During a recent interview with The Guardian, the 57-year-old Academy Award nominee admitted to the same, saying, “My ex-wife, Kate, was the greatest love of my life.”
At the same time, he also revealed that such was not the case anymore, as Pearce has moved on and someone else has taken over that position from Mestitz now. As The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert actor continued to confess, “I’ve moved on from her now and the greatest love of my life is my child, Monte.”
That is to say, back when they got divorced, Pearce also came clean that he was left heartbroken because it was his ex-wife who had abruptly called off the pair’s marriage. Speaking on Andrew Denton’s Interview in 2018 (via Express.co.uk), he revealed,
The way she put it (when we split) was that we were probably some of those kids when we got married, too. And so I guess it was sort of a growing apart, you know. I couldn’t believe it for a long time.
But now that he has believed it, Pearce has moved on too, and the current person ruling his heart is none other than his own child. But, going back in time, his now-ex-wife Mestitz was also the person whom he came clean about his Kevin Spacey fears with.

Recently, on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Guy Pearce also confessed to letting out his fears of being targeted by Kevin Spacey and being a victim of his alleged advances on set to his now-ex-wife while he was working on L.A. Confidential with him in Los Angeles.
He recalled telling Mestitz that “the only days I feel safe are the days when [Simon Baker] is on set because I’m dumped like a hot potato, and [Kevin] focuses on [Simon] because he was ten times prettier than I am.”
At the same time, he also came clean about how he brushed off Spacey’s alleged advances back then, saying, “‘Ah, that’s nothing. Ah, no, that’s nothing.’ I did that for five months, and really I was sort of scared of Kevin because he’s quite an aggressive man. He’s extremely charming and brilliant at what he does — really impressive, etc. He holds a room remarkably. But I was young and susceptible, and he targeted me, no question.”
But when he caught the headlines of the accusations against Spacey making their way into the court of law, Pearce admitted that he “broke down and sobbed, and I couldn’t stop” as he felt the impact of it all dawn on him.
However, both Pearce and Mestitz – and even Spacey – have come a long, long way since then, for soon after his divorce, Pearce met his next partner and Dutch actress, Carice van Houten, in 2015. While the pair have split since then, they continue to be happy with just co-parenting their son together, Monte Pearce – the very child who is the greatest love of Pearce’s life now.
