After a long, long wait, Captain America 4, Brave New World has finally made its way to the screens, and the reviews are… well, mixed. While some fans are down to giving it a chance, a majority of the critics have officially deemed it a goosebumps-ripped disaster that could have unfolded a lot differently and in much more spectacular ways.

But the thing is: Things would have unfolded differently and, perhaps, made it all a bit more enticing and exciting for fans had things gone down that lane. This is because there was a chance that World War Hulk could have almost been teased, since the director teased that things about the Illuminati were purposely left as vague in the flick as they were.
Captain America 4 reportedly planned to have the Illuminati at one point in the script

Those who have already seen the movie know that Captain America: Brave New World, aka Anthony Mackie‘s first solo film as the titular superhero after taking the mantle (more like the shield) from Steve Rogers, didn’t hold back on the characters introduced in the movie. But while the ones that made it are one thing, what’s gaining even more attention are the ones that didn’t quite.
For one, reports had been going around that there were going to be even more characters than the ones that made it to the screens, and that there was also going to be an Illuminati at one point in the script. Since the thought of who it was had been bugging many, director Julius Onah was asked about the same during a recent interview with The Wrap.
But, of course, Onah wasn’t entirely candid about it all, and instead teased their further involvement going forward. When asked who the Illuminati was that he was going to add to his film, the filmmaker said, laughing,
I’m not going to say! I’m not going to say. Let’s just say things are purposely left vague in that post-credit for a reason.
For the record, the scene in question here is the post-credits scene of Captain America 4, which garnered a lot of negative attention and backlash from fans for failing to build up the anticipation for the upcoming movies that it should have. To say the least, the only thing it teased were all the multiple universal threats about to approach in Secret Wars, and fans, of course, are not pleased.
Fans react to Julius Onah’s teasing of Illuminati in upcoming pieces

While Onah decided to keep everything under wraps and only tease fans about what they could expect in the upcoming projects, his mere hinting at the Illuminati having a significantly more defined role going forward means that even Mark Ruffalo‘s World War Hulk was also almost teased in the flick. This part is what seems to be further getting to fans.
As @DiscussingFilm on X pointed out, “The Illuminati were going to appear in ‘CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD’ at one point but they are now teased in the post-credit scene instead.” Since then, fans have been countering with their own responses about how, had they opted for a more defined approach, the movie could have turned out to be more interesting:
Maybe the movie would’ve made money

That post-credit scene was top three worst scenes from Marvel. It provided zero excitement for the future.

Marvel really got no idea of what they are doing, do they?

Had to have been one of the worst post credit scenes I’ve ever seen. Vague isn’t even the issue, just the word salad of a script the leader used needed a lot of touch ups

Marvel staying committed to their favorite game: endless teasing with zero payoff until Phase 12

They weren’t teased 😂
Literally every other universe was teased for like the 20th time

All in all, Captain America 4‘s helmer, Julius Onah’s dropping the bombshell about the Illuminati once being a part of the script has left fans wondering what could have been amidst the film’s post-credits scene sparking widespread disappointment.
But through all of this, one thing is for sure: As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to evolve, fans are eagerly awaiting more concrete developments – not just vague teases.
Captain America: Brave New World is out in theatres now.
