Buying tickets at different retailer pays off for Essex woman
A Baltimore County woman and her husband won big playing the popular Pick 5 game last weekend. Their regular Lottery retailer is a Royal Farms store, but they decided to buy tickets at a 7-Eleven instead and wound up with a $50,000 winning ticket.
The Essex resident and her husband were in a Middle River 7-Eleven for other reasons when she decided at the last minute to purchase Lottery games.
“I wasn’t going to buy anything at first,” said the winner. “But, I had a few extra dollars so I went ahead and bought some quick-pick games out of the machine.”
Included in the bunch was a $1 Pick 5 quick-pick straight bet ticket in the Dec. 1 evening drawing. The couple left the store and didn’t check the tickets that night as they normally would.
“I was so tired that night, I just fell asleep without looking at them,” she told Lottery officials when she claimed the prize.
On Monday morning, the loyal player scanned her games using the Lottery app on her phone and was stunned when she scanned the Pick 5 ticket. It showed she won $50,000.
“I was hysterical, crying and laughing at the same time,” she said. “I could hardly talk when I called my husband at work to tell him the news.”
“At first, I thought something bad had happened,” recalled the winner’s husband, who accompanied his wife to claim the prize. Later in the conversation, he found out that his wife’s news was fantastic.
The stay-at-home wife attributes her lucky win to her father, who passed away recently. She plans to use the prize to help family members as needed and to make the holidays extra special for her grandchildren.
The Pick 5 player purchased the winning ticket at 7-Eleven #41223 located at 11500 Pocomoke Court in Middle River. The Lottery retailer will receive a bonus of $500 from the Lottery for its winning sale.
