Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the NBA’s history, LeBron James has built up a legacy that transcends the court. A cultural icon, he is no less than a legend. But even the greatest among us are not safe from scrutiny. And when it comes to being scrutinized, James knows it all too well thanks to his peculiar habit of ‘lying,’ an act fans allege the Basketball God is pretty fond of.
Across the internet, one can find several videos and instances of James allegedly lying, but the most embarrassing is when he claimed to have watched The Godfather half a dozen times.
LeBron James’s The Godfather Fiasco That Branded Him a Liar
Francis Ford Coppola‘s The Godfather is one of the greatest films ever to be made. Based on Mario Puzo’s novel of the same name, the trilogy is no less than a legend in the history of cinema. So it did not come as a shock when back in 2016, after devouring the NBA title for the Cleveland Cavaliers, the King of Basketball, LeBron James named it his favorite movie.
While talking to ESPN’s Chris Broussard, James told him that he had seen The Godfather 2 the night before Game 5 and that it was the sixth time he was watching the film that postseason since it helped him to settle down and score big. However, when it came to recalling his favorite part of the movie, during the post-game conference, he ended up miserably embarrassing himself.
Despite being asked to name a scene, a moment, or a line, James was unable to do so at all but instead answered that the movie was ‘difficult to categorize.’ While it is possible that he failed to come up with a reasonable answer since he had plenty on his mind, his words and reaction, however, seem to hint that he had never seen the movie, let alone watched it six times.
True, the films are incredibly complex and comprise many memorable quotes and moments. They are also the most quoted ones in the history of cinema. Hence, even today, this incident continues to be recalled by fans, who continue to herald the NBA legend as a habitual liar.
Fans Believe Basketball God LeBron James is a Habitual Liar
LeBron James is no less than a delight to watch when he is on the court, but outside the court, the NBA legend seems to struggle when it comes to ‘honesty.’ While the above-mentioned incident is just one, there have been countless times when fans believed James was lying, leading them to label him a habitual liar.
Apart from allegedly lying about watching The Godfather 6 times, James was once seen reading The Autography of Malcolm X, but when asked at the same time to recall what he had read so far, he failed to respond. In another instance, he even allegedly lied about watching a soccer game, without realizing that the person he was telling this about was on the team he was claiming to have watched (see Revolt).
But these are only the tip of the iceberg for fans have found several other instances where the Basketball legend was allegedly lying (see X). Although he did recently jokingly hit back at the internet branding him a liar (see X), it hasn’t stopped fans from changing their opinions about him. And his The Godfather fiasco is one of many instances where he went from being called the NBA GOAT to a liar.
