Julian Holloway dead aged 80: Ex-Doctor Who and Carry On star dies as tributes pour in after glittering career

ACTOR Julian Holloway known for his roles in Doctor Who and the Carry On films has died aged 80.

Tributes have poured in for the star, praising his glittering 59-year-long career in TV and film following his death.

Julian gained fame after featuring in eight Carry On films between 1967 and 1976 as well as one of the Carry On Christmas TV specials.

He also played a leading role in the Doctor Who serial Survival, which was the last story of the show’s original 26-year run.

Actress Sarah Douglas, who first met Julian professionally in 1973, led the tributes with a moving message for her friend.

She said: “I lost a dear friend yesterday and I’m so, so sad.

“I have known Julian Holloway since the early 70’s and he has been the best of friends to me all these years.

“Julian was the wittiest of men and we would laugh and laugh.”

The star, best known for playing Kryptonian supervillain Ursa in Superman and Superman II, added: “He was a friend through thick and thin, first in London then LA then back home again.

“He was also the associate producer of the Brute 1977 but I had first met him professionally in 1973 on a BBC drama called “Secrets”.

“There will be lots written about him and all his wonderful work but right now he is just a dear and sorely missed friend.”

Actor and broadcaster Morris Bright also paid tribute, saying: “Very sad to be told Julian Holloway has died aged 80.

“An accomplished actor who could play comedy as deftly as serious roles, from A Hard Day’s Night to Carry On and beyond.

“Son of Stanley Holloway whose OBE I was recently bequeathed.

“I shall look after it in both their memories.”

Author and actress Carol Drinkwater added her own tribute, saying: “RIP Julian Holloway.

“A very fine actor.”

Fans also paid tribute to the “fantastic comedy actor”, with one saying: “This is such sad news.

“Bless you Julian.”

Julian was born in Watlington, Oxfordshire, on 24 June, 1944, and was educated at Ludgrove School, Harrow School, and later the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

He began his career in 1961, featuring in an episode of The Avengers, before his first major acting role as Quentin in the 1962-63 television season of Our Man Higgins – he played this character in four episodes.

Julian then quickly rose to fame as one of the mainstays in the Carry On film franchise, alongside the likes of Kenneth Williams and Charles Hawtrey.

Following this, he featured in an episode of police drama The Sweeney and had performances in a range of other shows.

The star developed a reputation as a successful voice actor, primarily in the US, and later performed as Captain Zed in Captain Zed and the Zee Zone.

Julian’s voice featured in 55 of the 65 episodes of James Bond Jr., an animated American show based on the James Bond franchise.

He also voiced Siegfried Fischbacher in 2004’s Father of the Pride, and Prime Minister Almec in several episodes of the long running show Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

His prowess in vocal artistry could also be seen in video game performances, including for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and Medal of Honor: European Assault.

Julian also provided the voice of Death in the popular animated series Regular Show for six seasons.

The star is the father of renowned author and former model Sophie Dahl.

She was born from a brief relationship Julian had with Tessa Dahl in 1976, the daughter of actress Patricia Neal and author Roald Dahl.

Sophie’s first novel, The Man with the Dancing Eyes, was published in 2003 and was followed by Playing With the Grown-ups in 2007.

She has since gone on to release a number of cookery books as well as children’s books.

Julian had married actress Zena Walker in 1971 but they divorced shortly afterwards.

He had then met and married fellow voice over artist and actress Debbie Wheeler in 1991, but this ended in divorce five years later.

The star’s final performance came as Prime Minister Almec in a 2020 episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
