Lebanon’s Parliament elects General Joseph Aoun as the new President after numerous failed attempts.
Following his victory in Thursday’s vote newly elected President addressed the Parliament, emphasizing unity and progress – Aljazeera repoted.
Analysts believe that Aoun’s presidency backed by United States will bring significant changes to Lebanon’s political scene.
After 13 unsuccessful attempts to fill the vacant presidency, Lebanon now has a leader who many hope will stabilize the country. Though Aoun didn’t secure enough votes in the first round, he succeeded in the second round, gaining support from both the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.
Observers think Aoun’s leadership could play a crucial role in managing the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah which has impacted Lebanon for 14 months.
Many believe his election essential to bring nation back on track.
Lebanese people welcomed the new President with optimism. They expressed hopes that his leadership will mark beginning of better days.
A young citizen remarked, “We had almost given up and were considering leaving the country, but with the new President, it feels like a brighter future is ahead.”
Citizens also demanded that Hezbollah’s activities be curtailed, emphasizing that only the military should have the right to bear arms.
In his speech Aoun called for unity and encouraged nation to embrace its religious diversity without sectarian bias. He pledged to strengthen Lebanon’s military and ensure proper regulation of arms in the state.
