Johannesburg residents have been strongly advised to refrain from performing baptisms and cleansing rituals at river streams as the city experiences nearly a week of continuous, heavy rain. The downpours have significantly raised river water levels and created dangerous currents, posing serious risks to those engaging in religious practices near water bodies.

Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), expressed concern about the current weather conditions and urged residents to prioritize their safety.
“Due to disruptive rainfall which we have been receiving in the last five days, most of our river streams are full,” Mulaudzi stated. “Residents who normally conduct baptism and cleansing rituals are urged to stay away from river streams.”

The EMS has been actively monitoring river levels and responding to weather-related emergencies across the city. Rescue teams remain prepared to act swiftly in the event of floods, accidents, or drownings caused by rising water levels.
