“It wouldn’t be nuanced in the same way”: Chadwick Boseman Wasn’t Totally Against a White Director Helming Black Panther but Knew Why It Was Foolish

Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther is hard to imagine with a White director at its helm. Apart from the controversies that it would have brought for Marvel Studios, it was only the right thing to do as Ryan Coogler had a personal connection to the subject matter. While Boseman agreed that a White director could’ve done the film, they probably wouldn’t have had the perspective that Coogler, a Black director, had.

Interestingly, even Coogler didn’t believe that he was qualified to do the film just because he was Black. Before filming Black Panther, Coogler visited Africa so that he could more accurately depict Wakanda in the film. Coogler is all set to make his threequel to the film, which would be his second film without Boseman who passed away in 2020.

Chadwick Boseman explained why a White director wasn’t the best idea for Black Panther

Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther was one of the rare entries in the MCU that was noted for its cultural significance. With spectacular performances from the likes of Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, and Letitia Wright, the film went on to become one of the best MCU films. Coogler shared with Variety that his view of themes of identity certainly played a role in the art he put out.

When Boseman was asked in 2018 whether a White director could’ve made Black Panther, he had a well-thought-out explanation. He shared that a White director could’ve made the film but they wouldn’t certainly have the perspective that Coogler had. Boseman explained that Coogler’s view on the matter was more nuanced.

He shared that a White director wouldn’t have experienced the same conflict as a Black director. He shared that Ryan Coogler understood this conflict well, which gave him the right perspective to make this film. Boseman shared with Variety:

Well, is it possible for them to make it? It could be, yes. Would they have his perspective? Probably not. It wouldn’t be nuanced in the same way because they wouldn’t have the same conflict. They don’t have the African-American conflict that exists: Whether you’re conscious of it or not, you have an ancestry that is very hard to trace.

Coogler chimed in, adding that he liked movies where the filmmaker had a personal connection with the subject matter. He added that it was the reason why films like The Godfather, Mean Streets, and Goodfellas worked in the first place.

Marvel is finally ready to bring a new actor as Black Panther

The Insneider‘s report on Black Panther recasting is surprising, considering Marvel’s earlier stance that they wouldn’t do so out of respect for Chadwick Boseman. The actor passed away in 2020 after a quiet battle with colon cancer in 2020. After Marvel decided not to recast, the character was shown to have died offscreen in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Jeff Sneider shared that “the door is firmly open for T’Challa to be recast”, adding that it would happen via the multiverse. He further reported that after Robert Downey Jr. announced his return as Doctor Doom, another actor was approached for the role. This actor reportedly turned down the role, fearing that he wouldn’t be able to fill Boseman’s big shoes.

Sneider claimed that the new T’Challa might not make his appearance in either of the Avengers films. Sneider assumed that the new actor would debut in Ryan Coogler‘s Black Panther 3, a project that Denzel Washington confirmed last year.

Black Panther is now available for streaming on Disney+.
