Donnie Wahlberg Previously Teased a ‘Blue Bloods’ Offshoot
While celebrating the end of its 14-season run with Blue Bloods, Donnie exclusively teased the possibility of the show’s continuation with Closer.
“It’s been discussed. I’m sure it’s been discussed in multiple formats and multiple areas with multiple people,” the New Kids on the Block alum told Closer in December 2024. “But you know whatever’s going to happen with the spinoff is going to have to be done thoughtfully and carefully. That’s quite a legacy to live up to after Blue Bloods. And if the show doesn’t carry on some of those magical elements of Blue Bloods, then I think it would be a disservice to the show. So, it’s really just it’s being talked about.”
Cast Reactions to the Cancellation of ‘Blue Bloods’ Proved It Came As a Surprise
CBS announced in May 2024 that Blue Bloods season 14 would debut the series finale that December.
“I really want to thank the cast and crew, everyone involved in the show,” CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach said in a statement at the time. “We absolutely will miss the family dinners. It is important to give show the sendoff it deserves. We really want to thank the cast and crew, everyone involved in the show,” the statement continued. “We absolutely will miss the family dinners. It is important to give the show the sendoff it deserves.”
The network didn’t disclose their reason for canceling the show, leading some of the cast and crew to react to the shocking decision.
“I think one of the things we haven’t really talked about is having worked so long with the crew that we had in New York City,” Donnie told Fox News Digital on December 14, 2024. “I personally — and I’m sure some of the other castmates — felt bad. I felt sad.”
Meanwhile, Blue Bloods main star Tom Selleck shared how “frustrated” he was to learn that the series was cut.
“If you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe,” Tom told TV Insider in October 2024. “My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go.”
