WHEN it comes to your wardrobe, avoiding looking like “mutton dressed as lamb” is an age-old rule.
But it’s not just dressing too young for your age that could be a fashion faux pas.
A fashion expert has warned against three ageing items in your wardrobe[/caption]
There are also a few seemingly innocent outfit staples that could be ageing you by a decade.
So if you own oversized cardigans, round toe slingback shoes or wool gloves, listen up.
Fashion expert Giorgio Ammirabile, of CSD, explains how these items are dating your look.
Comfortable not chic
They might feel cosy but oversized cardigans do no favours for your look, according to Giorgio.
He says: “They’re bulky and drown silhouettes, giving a dated and frumpy vibe, making you look shapeless and older than you are.”
Instead, he suggests opting for more tailored knitwear like a fitted or cropped cardigan that cinches the waist.
“Go for clean lines and structured shapes that highlight your figure and pair with high-waisted trousers or jeans to balance the look”, he adds.
Practical but dated
Next up, Girgio insists that round toe slingbacks with a block heel might be comfortable but are a fashion no-go, making your outfit look “matronly”.
He pleads: “Instead choose pointed toe mules or sleek kitten heels.
“Pointed toes lengthen the leg and create a more youthful look. But if comfort is key for you, a modern loafer or ballet flat is ideal and on trend.”
Used wool gloves: overworn and old fashioned
Gloves are a fashion essential at the moment with the freezing temperatures.
But if they’re stretched, faded or pilled then they can make any outfit look old and careless.
Giorgio says they might feel nostalgic but they are not the accessory to elevate your look.
Instead, he suggests upgrading your winter wardrobe with sleek leather gloves or wool gloves in bold fresh colours.
He adds: “You could even opt for gloves with contemporary details like zippers or stitching for a chic edge.
“Accessories are the finishing touch to any outfit so don’t let them age you.”
A bonus offender
While popular on social media, Girgio is adamant that “socks and Birkenstocks can never be pulled off”.
“It might look trendy at home and be the perfect comfort combo in your head but in reality it looks sloppy and unpolished” he says.
So if you love Birkenstocks, perhaps try their sleeker leather styles and ditch the socks for a minimalist vibe. This simple swap will instantly update your look.
Giorgio concludes: “In short, looking stylish and youthful doesn’t need a complete wardrobe overhaul.
“Instead, focus on pieces that enhance your shape and avoid anything overly chunky or worn and prioritise clean and modern lines.”
