It’s not uncommon for sitcoms to botch their ending, as over the years, only a handful of shows have managed to conclude things on a high note, and unfortunately, Josh Radnor’s How I Met Your Mother wasn’t one of them. But amidst all the issues that plagued the final season, which includes its odd pacing, it’s the infamous finale that caused most of the commotion.
Not only did the decision to reunite Ted with Robin ruin the build-up of the entire season, in hindsight, it was also an insult to one of Ted’s best girlfriends, Victoria.
Ashley Williams doesn’t wish to be in Robin’s shoes
Before the writers went through with the controversial ending, according to Ashley Williams, Victoria was initially conceived as the mother by the showrunners in case of any potential cancellation. Unfortunately, despite her impeccable chemistry with Josh Radnor’s Ted, the latter’s friendship with Robin contributed to her second breakup with him.
Similar to fans, Williams echoed, “I think Ted really missed out.” On the bright side, given how the reception to the ending has been, the HIMYM star prefers to be in this position, adding (via Nicki Swift):
I think Victoria is so romantic and the idea that she’s off in Germany with Klaus, it’s just so sad. I think Ted really missed out… Agreed. I would rather be in this position … I hear probably every day, ‘Oh, I wish Ted had chosen Victoria.’ I would rather that be the case than ‘I wish Ted hadn’t chosen Victoria.’ I would take this any day.
How I Met Your Mother is one of the many high-profile sitcoms whose ending left a lot to be desired among fans, and its successor, How I Met Your Father, did little to alleviate this.
Ashley Williams’ kids are obsessed with Josh Radnor
Apart from excelling as Ted in the sitcom, Josh Radnor has also had a knack for music, and his escape from LA back in 2021, which was partly due to his breakup, contributed to the creation of Eulogy: Volume 1. While it has been over a decade since Ashley Williams and Radnor crossed paths onscreen, the actress confessed that her children are pretty fond of the latter’s music.

With the discourse surrounding the controversial ending still going strong, it doesn’t seem fans are going to settle down anytime soon.
