I turn up to training looking like a painter, everyone else wears designer gear but I don’t care says John McGinn

JOHN MCGINN has lifted the lids on the fashion battle behind the scenes at Aston Villa.

And he’s revealed how little he cares about it too – so much so that he thinks he was born in the wrong era compared to his team mates.

He thinks footballers are changing when it comes to clothing more than ever before[/caption]

The Scotland talisman and Aston Villa captain is one of the more humble footballers around.

He wittily shut down a question from a Polish reporter that likened the Scotland’s late win over Poland last year as “one of the greatest days in the history of Scottish football“.

When the journalist evoked the movie Braveheart to the midfielder, he replied: “You’re taking that a bit too far.”

Now, speaking on TNT Sports in an interview with former team mate Alan Hutton, McGinn has spoken out on what it’s like being pictured as the ‘worst-dressed’ of his team mates at Villa Park.

While some of them rock up in designer tracksuits, expensive shoes and fancy coats, McGinn prefers to be understated.

When Hutton recalled his compatriot’s low-key style, McGinn said: “I’m getting worse!

“I’ve stopped the shorts as much, though I do love a t-shirt and shorts.

“I used to get pelters but now I get battered even more.

“It is too much. Everyday is a fashion shoot. It’s not even the new lads, it’s everyone in general, the way football is going.

“Designer tracksuits, big posh trainers, jackets. We’ve got a few fashion gurus who all love their style but I look like a painter everyday.

“They all laugh at me and I don’t care.

“I’m just like, ‘So what lads?’.”

McGinn will occasionally splash out on some trendy clobber if there’s a night out planned, such as a Christmas party.

But on the whole, he thinks that with the way the sport is going he is feeling increasingly like he was born in the wrong era.

He continued: “When we go on the Christmas do or we have a night out and I have a wee bit more of a bash, they are all surprised.

“Where as if I did that everyday, they would just be like ‘same old’.

“So I won’t change in that sense and I think the way football is going I’m in the wrong era.”
