BRIDGET JONES is back – and as a 51-year-old widowed mum, she is still glugging her beloved chardonnay.
The famous singleton is not the only one to enjoy a bottle or two of the Noughties favourite.

Supermarket chain Aldi predicted sales of 1.1million glasses of the boozy favourite around the release of Mad About The Boy.
Here, wine expert Helena Nicklin tries a range of chardonnays and marks each out of five.
Chardonnay Australia
Lidl, £5.99

BRIDGET’S mother introduced her to Mark Darcy at a turkey buffet – and this white is the perfect partner for a poultry dinner of your own.
Its touch of toasty oak sings with roasties and crispy chicken skin – and there’s no better match for a Yorkshire pud.
A great value bottle, too.

Fairtrade chardonnay
Co-op, £7.65

A supple South African sipper with a tropical vibe – think smoky guava with honeydew melon and a refreshing slick of citrus to freshen things up.
It’s not overblown, though – and sales of this Fairtrade brand help educate hundreds of disadvantaged children.
Worth a splash.

Kooliburra Hidden Sea
Aldi, £7.50

THIS collaboration between Aldi and Aussie wine brand Hidden Sea is a great, no-brainer to snap up.
It’s a well-priced, mid-week tipple that is ripe but with a light touch.
As an added bonus, every purchase helps remove single-use plastic bottles from the world’s oceans.

Porcupine Ridge chardonnay
Tesco, £8.50

Chardonnay has come a long way since the sweet and synthetic flavours that Bridget may have enjoyed knocking back with pals Shazza and Jude in 2001.
This South African beauty is a classier type – crisp and refreshing, with a splash of apricot and melon plus a dash of oaky spice. Lovely stuff.

Yellow Tail chardonnay
Sainsbury’s, £7.75

THERE’S a good reason why this Australian stalwart has been around since the first Bridget Jones film came out.
It has some enjoyable juicy melon and peach notes with a slick of acidity to keep it fresh and a smidge of oak to balance it all up.
Jolly decent – and it comes with a welcome price tag, too.

Peaches & Cream chardonnay
Aldi, £7.99

TAKING its name from the old-fashioned hard-boiled sweets, this retro Aussie sipper brings a very relaxed, fruit wine vibe – but with a slight bitterness on the finish it’s not quite as plush as you would want it to be.
Still, it’s all good fun and a half-decent glugger.
As Bridget might say, v. good.

Pierre Jaurant chardonnay
Aldi, £4.85

France does traditional chardonnay very well, and this is a great example for less than a fiver.
An elegant glug, it has a restrained palate with notes of honeysuckle and apricot.
If Bridget is getting together with the girls, she might well reach for this fancy modern bottle on her weekly shop.

Estevez Chile chardonnay
Aldi, £4.29

Soft and mellow, with hints of peaches and cream alongside vanilla, nectarine and a touch of pineapple.
This is the kind of bottle Bridget might grab in a hurry to serve at a dinner party – perhaps with her famous blue soup. Cheap as chips.
Stock up in the fridge and drink very chilled.
