“I thought it was theatre…”: House of the Dragon Star Tom Glynn-Carney Had No Clue He Was Auditioning for GOT Prequel

Spoilers and scoops are the bread and butter of the entertainment and media industry in the modern age, and high-profile films and shows have to employ a myriad of best practices to keep their precious stories from leaking out. But it sending out dummy audition scripts to actors, or shooting fake scenes, projects will resort to these gimmicks to deliver the best possible product to their audiences.

This, inadvertently, causes actors to have very fun stories about their auditions, given that more often than not, they have no idea what exactly are they auditioning for, which was the case with Tom Glynn-Carney, who plays Aegon II Targaryen in House of the Dragon.

Tom Glynn-Carney admitted that he thought he was auditioning for theatre

With its numerous gruesome deaths and plot twists, it was important for House of the Dragon to keep a lot of things under wraps. During the audition process, the show sent out dummy scripts for its potential cast to read, which Tom Glynn-Carney sussed out to be something to do with theatre, rather than the show. He said:

There was a similar sort of tone to the language. It felt medieval. It felt sort of semi-classical, which was a massive jar to me. I thought it was theatre before people told me what it was.

Tom Glynn-Carney would eventually learn that he had been cast in House of the Dragon, as one of the principal protagonists of the show no less. The character that Glynn-Garney was able to create was something that has resonated with fans well, as he does sell the part of the unsure boy king with some authenticity. Further, the death of his son on the show was also sold pretty well by the actor, cementing him as one of the great characters in the Game of Thrones mythos.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, unlike House of the Dragon, seems to have received a lot of praise from George R.R. Martin, who looks pretty pleased with how the show ended up looking. On his blog, the author wrote:

I’ve seen all six episodes now (the last two in rough cuts, admittedly), and I loved them. Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible. The rest of the cast are terrific as well. Wait until you guys meet the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall.

Game of Thrones as a franchise is something that HBO is looking to expand exponentially, with numerous projects in development set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire. Meanwhile, Martin has reiterated that there won’t be any new Dunk and Egg stories (which serve as the source material for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) until he finishes The Winds of Winter, the penultimate novel in his Song of Ice and Fire series.
