Sam Raimi is credited to have created and established the superhero cinema with his spectacular Spider-Man trilogy. Having built the foundation for what would eventually become the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Raimi’s contribution to the world of superheroes remains unmatched. Especially his Spider-Man 2 is considered one of the greatest comic book movies of all time.

However, the director wasn’t always certain that Spider-Man 2 would take place and once even actually admitted that he would have been content if the film never happened. But what exactly made Raimi feel this way, well let’s go back the memory lane and discover the reason behind his surprising sentiment.
The reason why Sam Raimi would have been happy even if Spider-Man 2 never happened

Nowadays, when filmmakers and production houses make a comic book movie or an action movie, it is generally made with the intention of spawning a possible franchise. However, for Sam Raimi, when he was crafting his first Spider-Man film, the movie wasn’t just the beginning of a franchise but rather fulfilling and complete on its own.
While there were superhero flicks being made at that time, which did lead to eventual sequels, Raimi never approached the 2002 film with the mindset of creating a sequel, let alone a trilogy. In his interview with Super Hero Hype, way back in 2004, the filmmaker stated the following:
I didn’t know that I’d be directing it [Spider-Man 2]. But it didn’t really change anything for me. As far as knowing that there were three parts to this story because one, the Spider-Man comic books have always been in parts. But two, the movie itself seemed complete to me. In my mind, I was working on the story and I knew how I wanted it to end.
According to Sam Raimi, Peter’s arc from his struggles and sacrifices to his eventual acceptance of his ‘great responsibilities’ felt whole and complete by the time the credits rolled. Thus, having envisioned the picture as a whole on its own, Raimi didn’t intend for a sequel, nor did he ever think he would be directing one. But now, as fate would have it, Spider-Man 2 is considered one of the best superhero films of all time.
Spider-Man 2 is now one of the best superhero films

Sam Raimi felt that his 2002 film, Spider-Man, was a standalone classic, complete on its own. However, upon discovering the many lingering questions his first film left behind, as he revealed to Super Hero Hype, the director returned to direct the film and discover the answers to the unanswered questions.
While he did not initially plan on making a sequel, Spider-Man 2 eventually ended up becoming one of the best superhero films of all time. Even today, as per Rotten Tomatoes ratings, the 2004 flick is one of the best Spider-Man flicks out there. By exploring further into the psyche and life of our hero, Tobey Maguire‘s Peter Parker, and pushing his struggles to new heights, the film delivered a sequel that surpassed expectations.
Thanks to Raimi’s impeccable and nuanced direction, Maguire’s acting prowess, and the film’s perfect blend of action, heart, and character development, Spider-Man 2 has now cemented its legacy as one of the best superhero films ever made.
Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy is available to be streamed on Disney+.
