“I can hear spiders down the street”: Julie Bowen Was a Strict Mom on ‘Modern Family’ but One Time She Got So High She Crawled on the Ground

Julie Bowen entertained fans on Modern Family for 11 long years. While her onscreen persona often came off as a strict parent, her real personality couldn’t be farther from it. Fans are aware of the actress’ terrific humor and warm-heartedness that has shone through her in various interviews.

Now, as an industry veteran, she’d obviously had quite a colorful life. One particular incident, though, seemingly had left quite a mark on the actress.

While it is beyond funny in hindsight, at the moment the actress was left crying her eyes out. In fact, it got so bad that she ended up crawling on the ground for a long time.

Julie Bowen once got so high she was crawling on the ground

As stated above, Julie Bowen’s Claire had a reputation for being a strict mother in Modern Family. The actress, though, is known for her fun personality among fans.

However, even after her countless rom-com, and sitcom appearances, most people weren’t ready for a story she divulged about herself in a 2018 interview.

As per TooFab, appearing in an episode of Busy Philipps’ talk show Busy Tonight, Bowen talked of her experiences with mar*juana with the host. According to her, she doesn’t prefer w*ed, as it makes her “paranoid”

[Weed] is not for me. ‘Cause I’m a ‘who’s following me?!’… I can hear spiders down the street.

To prove her point even more, she recounted one incident where she had such a bad trip on the stuff that left her crawling on the floor. Basically, she was prescribed edibles by her therapist for sleep disturbance.

Although the Modern Family star was skeptical at first, ultimately, she decided to go for it. According to the actress, the instructions on the packaging noted that she would have to eat half the bag for it to be effective.

However, that seemed like too much for her, so she decided to be “really conservative,” and ate only a quarter of it. Unfortunately, that, too, ended up going way over her limit.

Cut to, I was still married, living at my house at the time, me going down the hall like this.

She demonstrated the situation by crouching down on the studio’s rug and in a ready to crawl position. Bowen noted that she was on her way “to find [her] husband,” while crawling down the corridor of her house, all while whispering his name very quietly.

Five to eight hours later, I was like crying, ‘My doctor told me to!’

The host added with laughter that the Joe Somebody actress got “way too high”. This only sent the audience into fits of uproarious laughter. Julie Bowen, for her part, seemed equal parts amused and mortified.

Julie Bowen recalled her Happy Gilmore days

Although Julie Bowen and Busy Philipps seemed to be having too much fun recounting their getting high stories, their attention soon turned to the former’s glorious Hollywood career.

The show pulled a picture of Bowen with co-star Adam Sandler from their 1996 Happy Gilmore movie to draw the actress’ focus. In it, Bowen could be seen wearing a tight-fitting white dress that revealed a generous amount of cleavage. True to her sense of humor, the actress didn’t shy away from poking fun at herself.

That is chicken cutlets on top of chicken cutlets with like a water bra. That is like six water bras.

Well, chicken cutlets or not, the gorgeous actress is set to reprise her character Virginia Venit in Happy Gilmore 2. Although Sandler had previously noted his reluctance to create remakes of his 90s movies, the news of the sequel hyped up the fans very much.

Moreover, they also seem to be waiting with bated breath to see what Julie Bowen has in store for them in the upcoming movie.

Modern Family is streaming on Hulu. Meanwhile, you can watch Happy Gilmore on Prime Video.
