The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across several regions in Zimbabwe. Areas along the main watershed, including Matabeleland North, the Midlands, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East, and Manicaland, are expected to experience varying weather conditions today.
The morning will begin with partly cloudy and mild conditions in these regions, but as the day progresses, the weather is anticipated to shift. Expect mostly cloudy and warm conditions in the afternoon, with scattered thunderstorms developing. Other provinces will also start the day with partly cloudy and mild weather before warming up later, accompanied by isolated thundershowers.
Yesterday, the Mashonaland provinces, Harare Metropolitan, Midlands, and northern parts of Manicaland experienced a mix of partly cloudy and mild conditions in the morning. Some areas reported isolated light rain before cloud cover increased later in the day, leading to scattered thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in certain locations. The rest of the country also saw mild morning conditions, followed by partly cloudy and warm weather with isolated showers, some of which were accompanied by thunder.
On the previous day, much of Zimbabwe was affected by widespread thunderstorms due to increased atmospheric moisture. Some notable rainfall measurements included: 70mm recorded at Agritex Nyamweda, 55mm at Lusulu Tsetse Control and 47mm in Gwanda
Southern areas such as Masvingo and the southern parts of Manicaland experienced light showers due to a cool and moist airflow. Meanwhile, the western half of the country began with cloudy and mild conditions, receiving light rain in some places as moisture from Botswana influenced the weather. By the afternoon, cloud cover cleared slightly, giving way to partly cloudy and warm conditions, with scattered thundershowers developing.
The MSD has urged residents in the affected regions to exercise caution, as heavy rain and thunderstorms could lead to localized flooding, waterlogged roads, and disruptions to daily activities. People are advised to:
Stay informed through official weather updates, Avoid crossing flooded rivers and streams, Secure property and livestock ahead of expected heavy rainfall and Seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms to avoid lightning strikes Authorities have also warned that heavy rainfall could result in flash floods in low-lying areas. Citizens should take necessary precautions and report any extreme weather incidents to local authorities for assistance.
With the changing weather patterns, it is crucial for residents in Matabeleland North, the Midlands, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East, and Manicaland to remain vigilant. The Meteorological Services Department continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide timely updates. As the country experiences this period of unsettled weather, staying informed and prepared can help minimize risks and ensure safety for all.
For further information and real-time weather updates, residents are encouraged to follow the MSD’s advisories and alerts. By taking precautionary measures, Zimbabweans can navigate this period of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with caution and resilience.
