TikToker Doctor Sooj delved into why some people are fartier than others[/caption]
An NHS doctor has gone viral on TikTok after revealing how often people tend to pass gas and why some people are worse than others.
The GP, who goes by Doctor Sooj online, said the average person is believed to fart between five to 15 times a day.
But this isn’t just a case of eating a lot of beans.
In a clip posted to this page, the 31-year-old medical professional from Hertfordshire shared that there are many reasons people could suffer from excessive farting.
“The NHS says that the average person farts between five and 15 times a day, but more than that can be normal for some people,” Doctor Sooj said in the video, which has almost 600,000 views so far.
“However, it can also be an indicator of certain conditions.
“People who have lactose intolerance or coeliac disease tend to be more flatulent than others,” the doctor explained.
If you have a lactose intolerance, you might get tummy pain, bloating and flatulence after eating dairy products like milk and cheese.
Meanwhile, coeliac disease is a condition where the immune system attacks its own tissues when gluten is consumed.
It’s found in food with wheat, barley and rye, such as pasta, bread and cake.
Your excessive tooting could also hint at other conditions too, according to Doctor Sooj.
“It can also be a sign of things like constipation, eating things that are difficult to digest and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS),” he added.
IBS is common condition that affects the digestive system, causing symptoms like stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation that come and go over time.
It’s often triggered by foods such as onion, garlic, beans, lentils, milk, coffee and alcohol.
The doctor’s TikTok has over 7,300 likes and plenty of comments from baffled users.
Many people confessed to passing gas much more often than the NHS average.
Paul commented: “I fart about 50 times before 10am.”
Amaz added: “I farted 20 times in the AM.”
“Better out than in I say,” Ali wrote.
At the end of the day, your farts could be down to a number of things, from what you eat, to food intolerances and medication.
Sometimes their smell can tip you off to their true cause.
But the NHS does state: “Do not self-diagnose. See a GP if you’re worried about your farting.”
There are some common foods that can give you more wind than others: they include certain types of meat, as well as the UK’s favourite fried delicacy.
