Fans of George R.R. Martin and Game of Thrones might have to wait forever to get their desired ending (that was not royally messed up by the makers of the HBO show). The author has been working on the sixth novel of the A Song of Ice and Fire series for over a decade and despite over 1,100 pages of material, it still has no release date.
Martin is not unaware of the trolls and criticisms from fans, however, as he managed to poke fun at himself during a talk. When asked what would be the one thing he would change from his books, he said that he would like to finish them, much to the cheers of the audiences present at the event.
George R.R. Martin joked about not finishing the Game of Thrones books

If Game of Thrones fans were a meme, they would be the one with Old Rose in Titanic exclaiming ‘It has been 84 years’. While the HBO show has ended (resulting in much debate, frustration, and tears), George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire is still not done as the author takes forever to finish the penultimate novel.
Martin has always been a procrastinator but The Winds of Winter has been on the backburner for more than a decade and there seems to be no release date in sight. The author has given updates multiple times about finishing a number of pages for the novel but Martin seems to be going through a next-level writer’s block.

Despite all the trolls and complaints from fans, Martin is self-aware of his tardiness and even joked about it at a talk. Talking at the Oxford Writers’ House, Martin joked about his unfinished books when asked what he would change about them,
I don’t know, I can probably change more than one thing. If I could change one thing about one of my books I’d have them finished.
The Winds of Winter has been in development since at least 2010 and the previous novel, A Dance with Dragons is the only one that was released during the tenure of the show. Another novel, A Dream of Spring is also in the works, which is supposed to end the main storyline.
George R.R. Martin said that he might never finish The Winds of Winter

During the talk at Oxford Writers’ House, George R.R. Martin mentioned that he was envious of one of his fellow writers who finished his series of novels while having a full-time job as a magazine editor. However, Martin had to deal with deadlines and pressures as his only source of income was writing.
However, in December, Martin seemed to be pessimistic about finishing the novel after thirteen years of waiting. He said to THR,
Unfortunately, I am 13 years late. Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time…But that’s still a priority. A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital.
The last update the novelist had given was that about 1,100 pages were done. Since starting The Winds of Winter, Martin has worked on Fire and Blood and a host of other short stories set in the Westerosi world.
Game of Thrones is streaming on Max.
