George R.R. Martin is not afraid to express his criticisms on Game of Thrones, whether big or small, and one of his quibbles that also vexed many fans was the omission of certain scenes. For a world as vast and complex as the show, it’s understandable that the showrunners could not fit everything. The author’s problem was that these removed scenes were very crucial.

The famed epic fantasy series wrapped in 2019 with a very unimpressive conclusion. We understand that there was no source material for this part of the story as Martin is yet to finish his novel series, but the earlier seasons were largely based on his books, so it’s easy to see which scenes made the cut and which ones were altered.
George R.R. Martin on his favorite Game of Thrones scenes that never made it to the show
If there’s one thing George R.R. Martin regrets in Game of Thrones, it’s the exclusion of his favorite scenes from the book. He revealed in an interview (via Clips Theory on YouTube) that he was frustrated some scenes were missing. He said that whenever he tuned in to the show, he would anticipate a scenario but then get disappointed because they skipped over it.
Another quibble he had was that these sequences, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant, were the actual scenes that actors delivered in their audition tapes. “Some of them were scenes that I had seen the actors do in auditions. They had been scenes that actually had helped the actors get their roles,” he said.

Martin knew that they would nail their performances because they showed and proved it to him during their tryout for the role, and it’s such a shame that we did not get to see those scenes. This is why the author wanted to have more than ten episodes per season. He actually suggested this before, and he even wanted the show to last for more than 10 seasons.
It’s reasonable given the massive world of Game of Thrones to allocate more time in order to accommodate every significant storyline. Hence, Martin wanted “to have two more hours to have a 12-episode season instead of 10, and, of course, to have an extra $50 million.”
Game of Thrones could have been longer than eight seasons

Martin never shied away from admitting he wanted the show to last a bit longer. In fact, he told Variety that he talked to David Benioff and Dan Weiss and pitched 10 seasons. He also stated that they could still go up to 13 installments because there is enough material to cover five more seasons.
Obviously, the author’s suggestion did not win. The showrunners and the cast and crew members were ready to move on. It’s a harsh truth that fans can only accept—we will never get to see those missing scenes come to life on the screen.
Game of Thrones is currently available to watch on HBO.
