“Eh, something doesn’t quite feel right”: Captain America: Brave New World Changed a Scene After Isaiah Bradley Actor Carl Lumbly Didn’t Like It

Captain America: Brave New World marks the start of a new chapter for the MCU as Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson cements himself as the new bearer of the titular mantle. The film also sees the return of Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, a predecessor to Wilson and a forgotten super soldier. However, director Julius Onah admitted Lumbly was unhappy with one scene in the script.

During a recent interview, Onah shed light on the creative process behind the movie, which has been in the news more because of its marketing campaign and extensive reshoots than its actual quality and storytelling. Onah revealed the scene he decided to change after workshopping it with Lumbly who did not feel it would work. Here is what the director had to say about the changes to the Captain America: Brave New World script.

Captain America: Brave New World director reveals the one scene Carl Lumbly did not like

Julius Onah directed the fourth installment in the Captain America franchise, with Anthony Mackie starring in the titular role. However, the film underwent extensive reshoots during production with several aspects being changed, including the omission of a more comic-accurate Serpent Society.

In an interview with The Wrap, Onah discussed some of the changes the creative team made during filming. The director highlighted the process citing one scene between Mackie and Isaiah Bradley actor Carl Lumbly, where Sam Wilson meets the latter while he is incarcerated.

Carl’s just like, ‘Eh, something doesn’t quite feel right.’ And I was like, ‘OK, well, you know what? Here’s another version of the scene.’

Onah made the above statement, revealing that he had written two versions of the scene.

The director further explained that after writing the scene, he rewrote it so that it could be workshopped between the actors. However, when Lumbly did not feel the scene was right, it was changed to its original state which is the interaction viewers see in the final cut.

In the same interview, Onah also reflected on additional changes to the screenplay, with reports of extensive reshoots dominating social media in the build-up to the film’s release. However, the filmmaker did not agree with the notion of reshoots being viewed negatively.

I don’t even necessarily look at it as change, as much as evolution. A screenplay is not a movie. A screenplay is a blueprint.

Onah made the above statement, denouncing the notion that the reshoots hurt the final movie.

Furthermore, Onah elaborated stating the film was always meant to focus on the triangular conflict between Wilson, Thunderbolt Ross, and Samuel Sterns. However, during production, the creative team evolved the basic narrative provided by the script to craft a more compelling version that they and the studio were happy with. Despite this, the film has received mixed reviews amidst a decent opening weekend at the box office.

Captain America: Brave New World is currently playing in theaters.
