Alongside a collection of images of him as Martin, James wrote a lengthy caption about his time on the show.
The actor said: “A decade ago, I was welcomed into the EastEnders family at Elstree—and that’s exactly what we are.
“No doubt, it’s a madhouse most days, but it’s also a place filled with people, both on and off screen, who pour their hearts into this show every single day.
“It’s truly special, and I feel incredibly lucky to be part of it, surrounded by the amazing people who make EastEnders what it is.
“Happy 40th @bbceastenders.”
The sentimental message caused concern among his fans as many shared their devastation at the thought of him dying.
Writing underneath the post, one fan said: “Is your post a good bye… no we love Martin and you are the best Martin of them all.”
Another added: “If Martin dies then we riot.”
A third show superfan then declared: “Don’t you dare be going anywhere cause I’ll be fuming.”
Before a fourth passionately commented: “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again!
“I swear to our lord and saviour Dorothy Cotton that if Martin dies I will never ever watch EastEnders again after this happened!
“They should be allowed to sit on that sofa together till they’re old and I won’t have anything else.”
