Donnie Wahlberg’s ‘Blue Bloods’ Offshoot: What We Know About the New CBS Drama ‘Boston Blue’

Fans are thrilled that the Blue Bloods universe is officially expanding. CBS officially announced the franchise’s newest iteration, an offshoot which will star series favorite Donnie Wahlberg, in February 2025. The working title of the new show is Boston Blue.

The Plot of the New ‘Blue Bloods’ Series Has Been Revealed

In a press release shared by CBS it was revealed that the Blue Bloods offshoot would not be taking place in New York City.

“In BOSTON BLUE, a universe expansion of the long-running top drama BLUE BLOODS, Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family,” the press release said.

Blue Bloods took place in the Big Apple, but it looks like Donnie’s character, Danny Reagan, will be taking on a new gig. Considering the New Kids on the Block alum is from Boston, the new show’s setting seems very fitting.

Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis signed on as executive producers and showrunners of the new show. In addition to starring, Donnie has also signed on as an executive producer of the project. Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed will also serve as executive producers.

Who Will Star in the New Blue Bloods Show?

So far, Donnie is the only Blue Bloods cast member that has been confirmed to be returning to reprise their roles. Before the announcement was made, many of the show’s original cast members voiced interest in doing a spinoff or continuation of the franchise, including Abigail Hawk.

Abigail revealed that a spinoff would likely not take place in New York City, which ended up reigning true with the news of Boston Blue.

“There was talk of a spinoff happening,” she told Hello! Magazine in October 2024. “But if it did happen, so immediately after our series ends, it would have to be not involving the Reagan’s or the NYPD at all. It would have to be set in L.A. or we follow a different family.”

At the time, she also shot down speculation that Blue Bloods would find a new home on another network after season 14.

“I don’t think there’s a possibility of it going to another network — I know that there’s been a bit of chatter about that, but I don’t think that that’s a viable option given the talks that we’ve had with the cast and the producers and things like that,” she said at the time.

When Will the New ‘Blue Bloods’ Show Premiere?

While no exact premiere date has been announced, CBS shared that Boston Blue will be making its way to the TV lineup in the 2025-2026 broadcast season. The show was given a straight-to-series order.

Currently, S.W.A.T. is in Blue Bloods’ Friday night 10 p.m. spot in the CBS lineup but anything can change.

Fans Reacted to the ‘Blue Bloods’ Offshoot News

Fans took to social media to celebrate the Blue Bloods news, while others were confused why the show was canceled in the first palace.

“What was the point in getting rid of blue bloods then,” one person wrote on X.

“Should have just kept Blue Bloods going…now they have to explain the move to Boston without Baez,” another person said.
