The rumors are true about the expansion of the Blue Bloods universe, and actor Donnie Wahlberg is grateful! On Tuesday, February 18, CBS announced that the New Kids on the Block member will be leading an upcoming offshoot series called Boston Blue.
Donnie, 55, spoke out about the project in a post featured in his Instagram Stories on Wednesday, February 19, after the exciting news was revealed in a press release. In the post, he shared an article about Boston Blue, writing, “See you soon #Thankful.”
In the press release, it was announced that Donnie will once again be stepping into the role of Danny Reagan, but this time, the show will be in a different setting. Danny is headed to Boston after taking a job at Boston PD where he will be “paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.”
Donnie will also serve as an executive producer on the highly anticipated new drama series.
Many are hoping that since the devastating cancellation of Blue Bloods after 14 seasons threw the cast and fans for a loop last year, that some familiar faces will be popping up on Boston Blue. The idea of beloved Blue Bloods characters making cameos in the offshoot remains to be seen.
“I am beyond excited but I hope the Reagans visit each other,” one person excitedly wrote on X after the straight-to-series order was announced.
Another person said that it would “be cool if he teamed up with Baker–we never got to see enough of BAker’s Detective skills–but she sure made a great secretary–lol–the commisioner always eluded to her being a great Detective.”
Another fan said, “@DonnieWahlberg We knew you had something in the works! I am absolutely thrilled that Danny Reagan is alive & well with a new city (Boston – my favorite) to serve in. Good luck & see you & your detective shield again soon.”
“Is Tom Selleck being cast in the spinoff of Blue Bloods? Or just Donnie Wahlberg?” a fan asked, while another penned, “Aww Tom Selleck was heartbroken when blue bloods got canceled. Hopefully he’s on this show.”
So far, no other casting announcements have been made regarding the offshoot. However, a source told Closer that Tom Selleck is interested in making a cameo in the new show, which is slated to premiere sometime during the 2025-2026 broadcast season.
“Tom’s been pretty vocal when it comes to his feelings about the network ending Blue Bloods,” the insider said. “He did not want to say goodbye to that role, so naturally he’s very open to coming back and doing cameos on Donnie’s show.”
Tom and Donnie’s friendship is everlasting, and fans would certainly enjoy seeing them on the screen together again.
“They are still very close, over the nearly 15 years they worked together they developed such a fantastic relationship,” the source explained. “They’re genuine friends, in a lot of ways they grew to be like family, that’s how bonded they were.”
