Before returning to the White House newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his desire to dominate Greenland and the Panama Canal – BBC reported.
He hinted at possibility of using economic or military power to achieve his goals. In response Greenland’s foreign minister firmly stated that their land would never be sold regardless of the offer.
Trump’s comments about making Greenland part of U.S. faced criticism from various European countries.
Despite objections Trump shows no sign of stepping back issuing threats instead. Denmark and Panama have both made it clear they will never give up sovereignty over their territories.
After multiple rejections Trump hinted at imposing tariffs and possibly using military action. He argued that controlling Greenland was crucial for U.S. national security particularly for ballistic missile warning systems.
As a NATO and EU member through Denmark, Greenland’s sovereignty has gained strong support from European countries. France’s foreign minister recently declared on national radio that EU would not tolerate any attacks on its sovereign borders.
Denmark also clarified that Greenland could declare independence if desired but would never become a U.S. state.

Trump is not the first U.S. president to show interest in Greenland; past attempts include a proposal by President Truman to buy it for $100 million after World War II.
